a q about pdf files?

Hey all you graphics ppl!

I know that if you want to send say, photoshop or illustrator files over e-mail, that it's better to send them as pdf files. But I find that when I do that, they are HUGE! Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to send them or is there a way to make the files smaller?

why is it better to send them as pdf files?

is there some sort of organization/structure that you wish the files to remain in, as in some sort of presentation?

if not, why not just zip/rar the files and send them that way?

you can convert psd's to pdf's

pdf was requested by the person I'm sending to. they're easy to convert, but when I attatch them to send, they're, like I said, humongous!

I suppose you could use winzip. If you go to www.winzip.com and download the free version then you can use that. The only thing is the other person has to have it also so they can unzip it. I am not sure how much smaller it would make the pdf file though. I could compress it trumendously.

rar is another compression format

i've always found it to have an improved compression rate over winzip
again the person on the otherside must have winrar as well in order to uncompress it

though, i have no idea if this guy has those programs on his comp or not. I'm sending stuff from a portfolio & i guess they're just going to have to stay big. *bites her fingernails* i hope he doesn't mind, lol. :o

im not entirely familiar with pdfs to be honest.
but would the size of the pdf have something to do with the conversion program you are using perhaps?

for example i know that different image editing software packages compress jpgs,gifs,etc... differently.

I'm not using any separtate programs. There is an option to save my files as pdf's within the programs I'm using. But, I'm finding, it doesn't matter because pdf's are generally going to be big anyway.

So, thankx again for the info, I'll keep it all in mind.
