I like Tool and APC equally, for their own merits. They both have unique features which make them great. Judith for a while bugged me, but in reality Maynard who wrote it doesn't hate Christ or his message. He hates organized religion and those who have used the concept of God to gain power and control over others. He isn't against spirituality and belief, only against following another's belief rather than your own. I disagree on a lot of it but have a lot fo the same issues with organized religion so I got past that pretty quick.
The Noose is my favorite song of APC's. I didn't have 13th step yet when I saw them live and that song blew me away. Passive is probably the best off of the new album. Pet was great, as was Rose and Orestes. But all their songs rock. Brena was a good one too. I love great lyrics and vocals, which I get from this. This band seems more poetic, which appeals to me.
Tool is better when I'm in the mood for something more aggressive and complex. Some of their songs have a hard driving sound and others have a brilliant sound. Tool seems to focus more on music than vocals at times, which is alright since some of their songs are downright artistic. Other songs seem to focus on the lyrics with a tendency to offend and stir up controversy, which is cool, they don't care what others think and like to bring attention to it. Theres a greater variety in Tool, I think.
So both bands fit a niche. Both are great musically and lyrically but have a different focus, and depending on my mood either is one of my favorite bands.
