I didn't say that we shouldn't be following doctrines, because every Christian follows some doctrines. But it's doesn't make sense to make a definition of a Christian based on doctrines, because of the fact that Christianity is too diverse for that. A Christian is someone who follows Christ, and it's a matter of self-identification, not a universal definition.

They certainly don't *make* a Christian or even a Christian messageboard. The people do that, too.

I didn't say the icons did - I say they communicate. And since this is a message board and there is no face-to-face communication, they often help with that. Honestly, look at my name. See I have mine hidden, so this isn't the biggest deal to me. I'm just saying that if you remove the meaning behind what they communicate than their purpose is completely gone.

I'll grant you that.

I would, however, argue that they are dangerous things because anyone can have them. Sometimes, people lie.

And that might do harm to a new Christian (or even an older Christian who is confused on some point.)

I think we've all got to remember some things:

1. This is a internet forum, not "real life"
2. It's a hobby
3. Erwin can do whatever he wants with his own site
4. Giving the new rules a try before leaving won't hurt - and it may allow some people to strengthen their faith

I think the ideas are interesting, and while some of them may have a temporary negative effect they will probably be positive in the long run

Karen, check it out. Just because I point out in the inconsistencies in her arguments doesn't mean I believe the exact opposite of her.

And yes, I do think they are. I haven't been nasty, I haven't said anything unkind, have I? I'm not even mad. I have simply pointed out the contradictions and said there has to be a standard otherwise you have no rule from which to define what is and is not truth.

A statement of faith defines beliefs, not truth. Beliefs can be true or not, but they can't be verified, or else they would be knowledge.
