  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Unplugging it might work. Taking the cable or satelite connectors when you aren't in the house to monitor. We just don't watch TV here. Public programming that is. Every so often we'll watch something on Discovery, and the kids used to watch Animal Planet, but we don't get it anymore. But mostly they watch their own DVDs and videos when they want to watch TV. All in all they spend more time outside or playing together or reading or what-have-you. I suppose it's because I've never been a big TV watcher. I love movies, but I get too impatient with 'episode' programs. And I think these 'reality' shows are a great big crock of...well...let's just say I fail to see the entertainment in seeing the depths to which people will sink for money.

:sorry: Didn't mean to go off on my own personal rant.

Peace be with you.

I presume you've already done the "Don't watch MTV" standing order?
No. I'm afraid it's too late for that. I'm afraid I dropped the ball on that one. I should have done that years ago. But I never really watched MTV to know how bad it is. Now that my kids are older (16, 17 and 18), it seems like it's on all the time. I'm only now realizing how bad it actually is.

do you have cable, brodcast or saterlight? if you have cable call them and they can provide suggestion.

of course since your talking about mtv I would assum you have cable or saterlight not brodcast
I have cable. Maybe I can have it deleted from my service? The only problem with that, even if it is a possibility, is that the bill is in my wife's name. And she's much more permissive than I am and probably would resist me on this. :(

It's never too late. If they are still in the house, they are still subject to your rules. Lay it down flat. No MTV. No debate. Tell them why, since they are all, or almost, young adults. Tell them you are sorry you didn't see how harmful it was a long time ago, but that you can't allow it anymore.

They will probably be mad for a while, but they will get over it. :)

That would work, if I were a single parent . . . if you get my drift. :)

Did you know that there used to be a time when MTV would play music?

MTV plays shows now, MTV2 plays the music. Along with VH1 and MuchMusic...
I hate MTV.. even music videos are so nasty. Occasionally I'll watch Boiling Points, but except for the language (it's all beeped out) there really isn't anything wrong with that show, and my mom will even watch it with me.

I recommend switching to satellite and putting on parental controls. It's usually cheaper, and better.

I'm not trying to sound mean about this, but I kind of disagree with Zoomom's suggestion of just saying "No MTV"... more times than not, this will just make someone do it because they're not supposed to. You have to make it so they're not able to, no matter what. :)

Anyway, just my two cents. ;)

If that is the problem I think the first thing you should do is talk with the other partner and speak about why you wish it gone, and what your objections are, and ask why she feels strongly about keeping it, etc. After all... she too is raising these children.

If you have cable, I believe you can call the cable company and have them block it for you.

I think that would be a good place to start.

And yeah, MTV is unbelievable bad. I think they even started selling a line of condoms in Europe... that tells ya something.
This will be the first thing I'll try . . . tomorrow.

Okay, I'm finally fed up with TV. I want to get some kind of filter to block out channels like MTV. I'm sick of it polluting the minds/souls of my teenage daughters with its contracepting, free-sex mentality. What kind of filters are available and how do I go about getting one?
If you get a dish www.dishnetwork.com you can block out any channel you want, with a password protection feature. You can do it "on-the-fly", and the guy who installs it will walk you through the process - its rather simple.
If you have cable, they can filter out certain channels, however unless you have a box on your TV, they will have to send out a truck and install a filter on the physical wire itself, at your cable box.

I recommend getting the 25/month dish because its all all-digital, featureful, and has EWTN :)
