A letter to my GOP representatives

    1. Since when is it acceptable for a president to mock his own secretary of state for trying diplomatic relations with another country when nuclear weapons are involved? This behavior and his twitter fits indicate a mental instability that disqualifies him from serving in any capacity approaching this level of importance. What are you and your Republican colleagues going to do about it?

    2. The White House is saying it’s “premature” to discuss gun control. Actually, it’s quite the opposite. It’s way past due to reform gun controls in this country. I am a gun owner and support the 2nd amendment. I also support common sense. What I do not support is the NRA’s stranglehold on the GOP. In this day and age, there is not one single valid reason for any civilian in this country to own an automatic weapon or any assault-type weapon. Not one. If this type of weapon were not readily available, do you think over 600 peoples lives’ would be forever changed because of one man in Las Vegas? Weapons of this kind should be banned. What are you and your Republican colleagues going to do about it?

    3. Let’s revisit the topic of expanding gun ownership and concealed carry. Let’s assume, and it’s hard to imagine that this is NOT the case, that someone, or many someones in the concert crowd in Las Vegas were armed. How on earth would that have done one bit of good? In this situation, totally useless. And if it’s not something like this, where the shooter is on the 32nd floor of a building two blocks away, it’s the element of surprise. It’s easy for some to think that they would have stopped this if they had been there and were armed themselves. What they fail to consider is that the shooter knows when and where; the civilian with a conceal-carry permit has no idea what is about to occur. The element of surprise almost always works in favor of the one doing the surprising. Which means not only expanding background checks, but including mandatory mental health screenings. It’s more than fair to say that every mass shooting in our country was committed by a mentally ill person. What are you and your Republican colleagues going to do about it?

    4. The response to the dire needs of our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico by this President have been literally jaw-dropping. Unfortunately, this is the just the latest group of people he chooses to engage in battle with (last week it was football players exercising their rights in a peaceful way) and yet another example of the mental instability that disqualifies him from serving in any capacity approaching this level of importance. What are you and your Republican colleagues going to do about it?

In closing: This “President” is not worthy of respect, loyalty or even my good ear at this point. I have never felt so strongly negative about any of our presidents until this one came along. He alone is tragically dividing this country, driving an even deeper wedge between Democrats and Republicans, empowering racists and white supremacists, inciting violence, pitting neighbor against neighbor, friend against friend. This man does not represent a leader in any way, shape or form. What are you and your Republican colleagues going to do about it?

Nice to see you posting again, Ben.

I'd like to see every gun owner have a license, every gun have a registration and every gun be insured like a vehicle. But I'm a simple guy.

This one really annoys me. If there's a Muslim terrorist attack, mere minutes after the attack it isn't "premature" for these same people to be talking about needing to implement a tougher Muslim ban or some other law to prevent it. Some "lone wolf" with a gun? Slow down there, we need a good six or seven years before we can come to grips with talking about gun control. Maybe ten. Certainly no more than fifteen. Ok, thirty.

If this Vegas guy had been Muslim, we'd already be launching Cruise missiles at camels' butts.

Then why does he seem to think we're his GOP representatives? I don't even live in the same state as him.

    Great questions!

I don't think all mass shootings are by people known ahead of time to be mentally ill, so I would use the qualifier "many" instead of "every" in #3.

I would also remove the word 'Republican' from the question sentence, to make it sound less partisan, and thereby make it more hearable, more effective.

I hope you and others do send something like this to your representative, but I would suggest edit to shorten the length -- the shorter you can say and ask the same things, the more effective it is.
