A Letter From Prison

Last week I had this dream. I was at my aunt's house when a letter arrived for me. This aunt is someone that I get along well with, but am not really close to. In the past, I've judged her decisions and life harshly (to myself).

The letter that came was from a prison inmate who wrote to tell me that a friend of mine who was also in prison was no longer there. The envelope contained what looked like a piece of human skin or flesh.

Later, the same inmate telephoned me at my aunt's house to say again that my friend was no longer there. He wouldn't say more but promised to discuss it further later.

I felt strange and confused. On the one hand, I was sort of glad that the friend no longer had to deal with the misery of prison, but the little info I did get from the inmate (the flesh, etc.) sounded bad.

Can anyone offer insight into this dream? I know that in dreams our friends often represent a part of ourselves. But I'm still confused.

It could be a positive message, i.e. someone is being set free from prison; bondage to the flesh. The flesh in your envelope was thus separated from the individual to whom it was once attached. So, this could be showing that in God setting this person free from captivity to the flesh that an actual separation from the flesh had taken place in this person's life.

The other thought I have is that the Lord is taking someone home. He is being released from his fleshly body and is now free. The envelope could represent a message you will receive concerning his death.

dream: I was at my aunt's house when a letter arrived for me. This aunt is someone that I get along well with, but am not really close to. In the past, I've judged her decisions and life harshly (to myself).

Separating yourself a little from the situation, possibly in a critical stance.

The letter that came was from a prison inmate who wrote to tell me that a friend of mine who was also in prison was no longer there. The envelope contained what looked like a piece of human skin or flesh.

A message to you containing a piece of themselves. This could show the person's safety was sacrificed in order to reassure you, or the person was in danger, or something deceptive was going on and the truth was not being told about their location and well-being.

You probably felt protective of the friend... but also think about whether you were critical, like you were with your aunt.

Relating to yourself...
Consider there may be something in your past that you are critical about having been involved in, that you push into the distance. Something you think deserves a severe sentence, or separation from society, or separation from your household. You'd rather not think of it as who you are now, so you send it to the remotest areas of your brain.

You want to make contact with the person you were back then, but bringing it up would bring back too much pain. The incident or set of choices may have taken out a part of you that seems impossible to replace.

Later, the same inmate telephoned me at my aunt's house to say again that my friend was no longer there. He wouldn't say more but promised to discuss it further later.

He wouldn't let it go. He didn't give you the information you would need to make contact again, so it could be frustrating, as if you'd lost the person you knew, or pushed them even further out of reach.

I felt strange and confused. On the one hand, I was sort of glad that the friend no longer had to deal with the misery of prison, but the little info I did get from the inmate (the flesh, etc.) sounded bad.

Take what I wrote as one possibility -- I am not trying to imply you did something wrong, or allowed something wrong. But the ideas might lead to other interpretations.

Thanks for all your suggestions and replies. Christsfreeservant, your first interpretation is similar to my initial thoughts. Then, about two nights ago, I had a very short dream that one of my front bottom teeth was very loose and shaky. Whenever someone close to me is about to die, I have a dream involving missing teeth. Somehow, I never connected the prison dream to the tooth dream until you mentioned it.

Any idea why the dream has me in my aunt's house?

No, but I just had a dream in the last couple of days where I was at my aunt's house, too. Well, it was my aunt and uncle's. My uncle was German-American and he has been dead about 20 years now. I've had several dreams of late with German-American people in them.
