  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, 'Here it is,’ or 'There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you." Luke 17:20, 21

The story goes that once some very wise men, who had each discovered the kingdom of God, met and discussed where they could hide the Kingdom so ordinary people couldn’t find it. One said, “Let’s hide it in the depths of the ocean.” Another said, “No, let’s hide it in the farthest galaxies.” The third replied, “No, they would look both of those places. Let’s hide it in the most obvious place, a place where they will never think to look because they’ll think it’s too simple. Let’s place the kingdom of God inside of people. They’ll never look there!”

I remember it hitting me one day how conspicuous it was that most everything I deemed significant about the spiritual life was outside myself. I went to church to worship God; God was at church. I studied the scriptures to know God; God was in the pages. I paid close attention to the words of certain spiritual leaders; God was in their voices. I imagined my prayers ascending upward; God was up in the sky.

Certainly Christian community, reading the scriptures, spiritual mentors, and prayer can all be a meaningful avenue for knowing God, but somehow I largely missed the fact that the true source of spiritual life resides within me where God dwells. In Colossians 1:27, the Apostle Paul wrote, “The mystery that has been hidden through the ages is Christ in you.” When we worship, read, listen, or pray, it is the Spirit within enabling us to connect with God, understand spiritual truth, and live as sons and daughters of God.

The kingdom of God is a kingdom of love, peace, joy, and freedom. If the king himself resides within us, it only stands to reason that the kingdom can be experienced as a present reality. The Pharisees were expecting it to drop down from the sky. Instead, Jesus told them to look within themselves. I wonder if they said, “No way! That’s too simple and obvious. God’s kingdom certainly would never be inside us.”

And so it is. It is the last place we look. Yet it lies secretly and silently within us, waiting to be discovered.

God, I am used to depending on people, places, and things outside myself for spiritual life; help me discover the spiritual resources you supply within me. Amen.

So my question is, what hinders us from tapping into the present reality of God's kingdom? Why do we miss or what distracts us from the flow of divine life within us?

This is an excellent question!

I think it is partly due to us not really believing that it is there. We may mentally assent to it, but many of us still have a "God is only on His throne in Heaven" mentality. In many ways, this is a defense mechanism, because to have a holy God anywhere near you, especially inside of you, can be a very scary thing. If we can distance Him, it is a lot safer, to our minds anyway. It would also make us live a lot differently if we did, and many don't want to live differently. It's nice to have God fix the messes we get into, but it's a totally different thing when He starts house-keeping.

I will ponder more on this, and hopefully, it will sink into my heart a lot deeper. Thank you for this post!

Seems like people walk around with this dull and assumed distance from God, and feel a burden to close the gap by being good. In this case the Bible fills in the blanks on what God expects, and we get busy. We want God’s love, acceptance, favor and blessing, and the Bible supplies the behavioral code of do’s and don'ts in order to get it. In the end, it seems we have "checklist Christianity" - the list of things we do to feel good about where we are with God.
What the Spirit continues to impress upon me is there is no separation between myself and God. there is nothing I need to do other than receive his love, joy, peace, and freedom which flow from his life within me.

My beginning relationship with Jesus began
When I accepted Him as Savior & Lord
He has been teaching me each and everyday
For the past twelve years but I really haven't
Been that close to Him since two years ago.
I will always be a student of Jesus for the rest of my life
Learning something and everything new each and everyday!
