What makes a good agent?

I am at the point where I need to start looking for one, for a children's book. What should I be looking for?

You have a lot of research to do.

Here's where to start. You need to search out the publishers most likely to pick up your particular book and then find the agents that are successful at placing books with those publishers. It isn't so much a "good agent" as one with access to the right publishers and one who believes your book is worth representing.

Get a copy of the "2010 Writer's Market" By Robert Lee Brewer and a copy of the "2010 Guide to Literary Agents" By Chuck Sambuchino. You will find them both invaluable.
