Our Father said He will have mercy on whom he will have mercy... He is a most merciful and fiercly loving father. We are His.
I have heard many near death experiences and one of the themes seems to be that we can repent even on the way to hell... That's how much grace we have.
Your friend was a Christian who lost his way for a minute.. surely as soon as he left his body, he realized his error and began to cry out to God. Who wouldn't. I believe he recieved God's mercy and Jesus took him to heaven.
