  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

put aside the quote mine for a minute, realizing that is your guy's greatest invention (the term quote mine), which is really not a term at all. Quoting out of context is very hard to prove. Misquoting is easier to prove. So I am curious as to how you prove this quote was out of context.

Since quote mining is mostly a "sin" creationists are automatically suspect when they do not do what any respectable quote would do. And that is provide a link to the source. In this internet day and age there is no excuse not to give a link to the source.

This is a subject that you did not understand yourself, neither did the quoter. Did you watch the video that I linked for you yet?

so by your own admission you believe something can come from nothing.

Until you watch that video you have no clue what you are talking about.

By the way, you believe in a "universe from nothing" but you believe in magic. The video that I linked demonstrated that no magic is necessary.

Okay, do you have Cliff's notes on this 1 hour and 4 minute video?

I watched it for 4½ minutes and learned how they have mutual respect for each other; Krauss lives in Phoenix now and used to live in Cleveland; Krauss evidently has an earwax problem in his left ear; scientists like knowing nothing, while religious people like knowing everything; I don't know how many times I heard, "But what I want to talk about ..."

Can we simplify this?

No, it takes a lot of information and already compacts it for you. This thread was started by someone that "Cliff noted" a quote and did not understand it. There are times that a more thorough explanation is a must. I will answer any questions on any specific parts of the video. But if someone is going to complain what is said in an out of context quote he has to learn what was actually meant.

ahah, you don't even know what a quote mine is. I suspected that. Quote mining is not when a quote lacks a source, for one.

so then what you are saying is you do not fully understand kraus and cannot simplify what he is saying for the purposes of debate. But at least you fully agree that "something came from nothing" that is a start. so then what do YOU mean something came from nothing. Can you please simplify it in laymans terms for us. If not magic, then what? What type of science does this. After all you mention physics, so please expand on this.

It is not what I said. Go back and read the posts again.

Did you do your homework yet? Of course not.

The problem is that video that you liked so much is based upon a quote mine of a simplification of that video. Until you watch it you are in no position to complain when corrected. If I simplify it you will misunderstand it, probably out of defense of your incorrect beliefs.

when you answer my question I will watch your video. Do you, or do you not agree with richard dawkins, at this point you will say, "in what manner." and my response would be, in any manner, do you agree with richard dawkins? Answer this, then we can move on.

A quote mine is an attempt to lie by quoting out of context. If I said that the Bible declares the non-existence of God and then quoted the 12 verses that I mentioned out of context that would be quote mining, or lying on my part.

you have never quoted a source for your definition of quote mine. you can't use wiki sources because, wikipedia and other wiki sources are error prone.

so what you are saying is that you have read the mind of the maker of the video and know for a fact that He/she is not mistaken, and has in fact mal-intent to deceive on purpose? Please prove that these are liars. If not, then we have refuted another comment of yours.

Yes, Dawkins is correct in most, if not all of what he said.

Now watch the video and I will answer any questions that you have on it. You seem to think that a universe out of nothing is a crazy idea, yet you probably believe the same thing.

It is rather like people trying to claim that life cannot come out of non-life when they believe that life came out of non-life themselves.

What makes you think that Wikipedia is error prone? It is actually a very accurate source, if used correctly. And didn't you ask for a definition without a source?

But here is a very reliable source that explains quote mines and how they are abused, and refutes many of them for you:
