  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A fascinating new view!

This I noticed in the science news above:

A new outlook for the universe

After all our discussions a week ago in which the topic of the cold death of the universe was elaborated upon, now this! I wonder if this idea will be accepted, or whether Linde and Kallosh have insufficient material to further their case.

Anyway, seesaw, you may have been right!! :)

Cheers,
Prax

I find this kinda funny. This is where you go when you don't believe in God ;)

New insights into the mysterious "dark energy" that appears to be pushing the universe apart suggest it may eventually lose its power.

What power is that? What dark energy? More things science can't explain :)

In short.... God is in control of the universe. "All things were created by Him and for Him, and in Him all things consist." Hmmm can't remember what book that's in, Romans I am pretty sure.

I believe God created and is in control of it. Yet people say that's ridiculous.

And they instead believe.... a big bang created a bunch of stuff. .... then it evolved after billions of years.... and now it's all giong to leave becaus ea dark myseterious power is tearing the universe in half. And they call God ridiculous :D

(speaking of this whole universe-torn thing, any of you ever play that old ][DOS... like 1989] game called Loom? hehe.... kinda reminded me of it)

Well it seems like the more we "discover" the more QUESTIONS we find... not answers...

Hubble didn't ANSWER too much ;) hehe. (I know a guy that worked ON Hubble, by the way, so it's not like I'm completely ignorant of that ;))

Ah well. :)

Well since the universe will not go away until billions of years from now we might get more theories about the death of the universe. :)

So, Paul, do you have anything insightful to add? Can you disprove their theories? The scientific community awaits in eager anticipation for your obviously enlightened answers!

Heck, let's ask some more questions:
You say that "God is in control of the universe." How does God control the universe? How can you test this hypothesis? What would disprove it?

That's just your opinion, everyone in the science community and NASA and a lot of regular people believe it has answered alot of questions. And if you would do more reading on Astronomy and Cosmology you would find that alot of questions have been answered.

What does non-belief in God have to do with it?

One more time, for the hard of hearing.  Say after me, "Non-YEC does not mean non-Christian". How many times must it be said before we stop hearing stuff like this?

What power is that? What dark energy? More things science can't explain :)

Can't explain?  Whyever not?

Just something to clarify for you here paulewog: {that which science has yet to explain} is not equal to {that which science cannot explain}.

And, by the same token, that which you do not understand is not the same as that which is not understood.

Great.  There's nothing in that article that says otherwise, and I'm at a loss to understand why you have inferred that it does.

One more time!  Say after me: "Evolution is not atheism".  Write it 100 times on the blackboard after school.  Maybe then you'll stop making such a basic error.  :)

One more thing - it's the nature of the growth of human knowledge that more questions are generated with each answer. This is not just an effect of scientific enquiry.

Only those with little knowledge have few questions. You may deny it, but I reckon that you do question God's methods. Maybe not out loud, but I bet you do... ;)

And hence, why I find science so much more facinating than religion.

I looked at that article earlier. It's interesting, but there are so many different hypotheses on what will happen to the universe, I don't worry too much about which one may be correct.

Like npetreley said, we'll find out in a few billion years :)

Probably none of them are correct in that sense. I find it to be a fascinating field, and I'm always interested to hear what the latest hypothesis is, based on some new discovery. It's very exciting.

I especially love TV docos on this stuff. More docos please! :)

A century ago, black body raditation baffled scientists. Today, the problems are studied by undergraduate students. Science never claims to be able at present to have a complete explanation for each and every phenomenon.

Do you want to talk about ridiculous? How about the idea that if you put a particle in a box and close the lid and seal it, it might be on the other side of the Universe when you open it up again? How about the idea that the Euclidean geometry that you studied in high school does not truly represent reality? Reality is ridiculous until you get used to it.
