That's the whole point. It's simply a file, so copy it and store it somewhere. Because google's browser sync has been known to eat data.

Yes; It's a good idea to back-up everything; to me profile didn't mean/include bookmarks; I thought You were saying to use Syncback, for your profile:

Syncback Free is another alternative for the user files

There are several ways to do it. In that post i was actually referring to backing up the Windows user profile, not merely the SJ user profile. That will catch docs, pics, etc, unless you have them in an alternate location.

You should have an image of your system, so you can restore from a catastrophe in half an hour. Then you should have a redundant backup of your own data, taken more frequently. Aomei will do both, but syncback is more convenient for the data if you don't need encryption. Both are excellent and free.

I used to look at Askleo.com, but he harps on back-up; so don't go there much anymore. He pushes Macrium back-up software thru his books; had any experience with them? Mostly what I worry about is my pictures; which is why I like MS's Onedrive with Win10; it pops up every time I d/l, email, or post a picture, image or even a screen shot and ask's if I would like to add it to Onedrive; pretty handy.

Macrium is very good. I don't like the interface though. I also store in the cloud, but I encrypt locally first, then upload. But when you're talking a 30GB disk image, local storage is the first place I think of, though the cloud as a failsafe backup to that certainly has merit.

Well I got a new Hp laptop with Win10 and my old HP LT with Win10 upgrade over Win7 went back to Best Buy to go overseas to help schools in 3rd world countries. The new one is so reliable; it's boring; I was so used to having to do something every week to keep the old one running or bring it back from the edge of total crashing (most not due to Win10) that i kind of miss the excitement.:D
One problem I have had is; Onedrive, mentioned above; and getting it to be as easy to use as it was in the old LT; it doesn't pop up when I download things or copy a picture to ask if I want to save it like before.
The Win7 that was the basis of the old machine seemed to have more built in programs/apps and things don't go in to pictures, documents, videos and music as easy as the old one did. It seems like the new HP LT; even though it has the same Ram; HD size and a little faster processor; is made like a strip-down internet box; just enough software to get you on and that's it; everytime I type in a search expecting to find something in the computer; it takes me to the web to look it up in the app's store or over to Microsoft's Win10 site to re-type in the thing I was looking for; before if it wasn't in the PC it would take me to a relevant MS site or somewhere else.
I guess it's the new way; everything on-line designed like a smartphone or touch tablet and nothing built into your PC like it used to be. Oh and the one app I did get from the app store; Onenote; was way more complicated then what I was looking for (something to easily store a few lines of scripture) and had more options then a 747 flight deck! Oh well chock it up to an oldbie complaining about things changing; but...if anybody has any suggestion on Onedrive; would like to hear it; thanks.

For backups in Windows I use AOMEI. For syncing to the cloud I use dropbox, which has a strong presence even in Linux. I use onedrive, but for storage, not syncing. I gave up on onenote and evernote and switched to CherryTree, which I like a lot. You may be able to change Win10's search behavior, I've seen some talk of it

Can you explain to me; what is syncing?
I thought I knew what it meant before (I do know what the definition of the word is; getting two things into harmony or when two programs have their data swapped back and forth so they have the same files) but now after I installed Onenote; when I go on some web pages or Facebook; I get this little tab jumping out from the right side of the screen; saying: FB synced or files synced; and when I had Onenote, I would go look in it's files and list and find nothing changed.
It still does it even though I uninstalled Onenote. Also with CherryTree; can you copy and paste a few lines of text easily without having to make a file or save as? Used to be able to do that with notepad but when I try to save or save as it goes to documents and is unable to save the file. sheese!

I was referring to syncing to the cloud, re dropbox and onedrive. In that case, there are local folders which are automatically replicated - mirrored, to be exact - on the remote server. I have a lot of onedrive space, but there's no good way to sync linux to onedrive (there is one utility, but I haven't tested it yet, and not sure I want to do it anyway). Dropbox, free, is much smaller, but works great.

There are local syncing tools that are excellent as well. In Windows, SyncBack Free easily takes the prize. You can sync in both directions, one direction, and more.

That FB problem seems to be a FB "feature". I would be very careful what it's syncing. Knowing $uckerberg, you might be publishing stuff either to your timeline or at least to his prying eyes. Check browser extensions, apps and plugins. Check your FB settings. Check startup progs in Task Manager, though Win8-10 don't show 10% of them to the user. I don't use FB because it's a privacy trap.

Unable to save the file? Try in another location, say Desktop. Or a different text editor. Might be a permissions thing. Yes to CherryTree. Simple, but gets the job done.

Well; figured out what I was doing wrong; not naming the file before I was trying to save it; works now; I think before with the Win 7 PC it was automatically naming the files; this new machine doesn't seem to do the basic things like before.

Yes; I went into FB's notifications and turned off all pop-up notifications and that seems to have stopped them.

Here is an article from Zdnet about a Forbes piece by Gordon Kelly that Microsoft is "gathering staggering amounts of data from Windows 10 users." It seems the data was from Voat (a Reddit clone) user; Cheesuscrust (really? he's got a lot of crust using that handle-lol-- he has deleted his Voat account after the Forbes story ran); and he reported Win10 contacting MS "thousands" of times in one day.

http://www.zdnet.com/article/when-it-comes-to-windows-10-privacy-dont-trust-amateur-analysts/

The contacts were mostly attempts by the router to make connections and for some reason or other not being able to. Looks like; chock another one up for the anti-Win 10 crew; Forbes this time.

Update on my new Win 10 PC. It seems to be learning how I do things and adapting; is that a form of AI? Onedrive now opens up the relevant file or folder where I usually store stuff; be it photos; screen shots; videos, etc. It also names the files; which when I first got the LT it didn't do.

I have used Cisco vpn but I usually faced problems because I think technology is getting upgrade and I never see any up-gradation from their team which also generate issues in VPN. I start finding a recommended vpn and mostly people said usa vpn - Ivacy which is user-friendly on every device, Easily allow to access Geo restricted content which is its strength for just 2.50/month.

I have to use Cisco VPN Client 5.0.07 for our work connection, took a bit of work to get it to work right with win 10, and win 10 doesn't like it at times during updates (it will disable it for my protection :p )

Down loaded the Anniversary up-date the other day; it took about three hrs; but part of that was getting the latest Windows and HP software up-dates at the same time. It all went thru fine; and altho I haven't looked at or used any of the new features because most of them were for Cortana; everything still works OK.

Except; the text under the icons on the desktop have went to a smaller size; I seem to remember a way of changing them back to the larger size; anyone know how to do this?
