Matthew 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. [kjv]
If you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.
Its been over forty some odd years now, but I still remember exactly where the " flowing well " was located. It was about two miles from my home. You could pull your car to the side of the road and walk up a path about (one hundred feet ). There you found a steady flowing stream coming out of the rocks. There you can take your drink, either by cupping your hands or by a container, the water tasted the same. Cold, pure, and refreshing.
Artesian wells such as this one used to be plentiful, but with greater drain on the water supply of underground water, the artesian wells have for the most part stopped flowing. You don't see many of them anymore.
These were the kind of wells that were prominent in Jesus's day. Living water he called it. Cold on a hot day. Refreshing to the body. Someone who could not come to the well to get their own water would receive it from someone else. Someone who was lame, blind, or sick with leprosy could not come to the springs of living water.
They were at the mercy of someone who would take time to bring them a cup of cold water. Often by the time that anyone thought of these thirsty people, the well would be drained down, or the water that had been drawn would be lukewarm and lost its fresh taste. Jesus wanted his disciples to think of these kinds of people first. Jesus wanted his desciples to serve others before they took a drink.
Sometimes we are insensitive to those around us who are thirsty for living water. Jesus said that God Himself would quench our thirst for his righteousness and keep us supplied if we would only taste and see that the Lord is good.
Even today we are surrounded by those who are not able to come to the well. Someone has to bring the water to them. That's what desciples are suppose to do. Bring water to the least of his followers The ones undergoing some of the trials of life need God's life giving water.
The water is not stagnant, it is moving. God is always moving, ever exciting and never stale. It comes from a hidden source. We cannot manufacture the work of the Holy Spirit.
The taste is fresh and clean. In all the power drinks and thirst quenchers we can buy, there is no substitute for a good drink of cold water
Remembering that we once thirsted for God, we can be on the lookout for someone who needs a drink of living water.
Remember the ones who brought you water that was not from an earthly well. Doc
Those that God will use, He purifies so they can testify.
