  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hmm, I`m not too sure what you mean, beetlequeendiva - what exactly do you mean by "put it on to material"? Do you mean, attach your cross-stitched piece to backing material prior to framing? :) If not, let me know what you mean and I`ll try to help.

I mean like have cross stitch on some linen - but i'm not sure how to do that. I think you do a normal cross stitch and then take the threads of the stuff you do cross stitch on out and then you have your cross stitch on the linen. I want to put it on white linen. I'm not sure if that makes sense....... i know what i want but i'm not sure how to explain. Sorry :(

You mean waste threads, do you want to put it on a shirt or something?

This stuff you iron on to the shirt or piece of material and stitch your design, and then you can pull the threads of the waste threads out one by one and that will leave the cross stich on the material.

You should be able to get it in your local needlework shop.

Mmm. yes, sounds like waste canvas you`re talking about. You can stitch straight on to the linen, but if you`re very new to cross-stitch, you might find it a bit tricky to start off with. I don`t know if anyone else can find any links to sites giving instructions on how to use waste canvas - I can find some but none that give good pictures.

I don't want to put it on a t-shirt no - i want to put it on a bit white material and frame it once it's made - what is waste thread? is that not the same thing that you do cross-stitch on?

If you are just going to frame it you can do your design on ordinary cross stitch canvas, and it will look fine.

I have framed several cross stitch designs which I have done on ordinary canvas.

I am by no means an expert on the subject but I would try it that way first before going on to more complex projects.

Another tip is to get a hoop or tapestry frame to hold the material taut while you complete your project.

You can cross stitch on linen. Its sold as cross stitch material usually in a 28 count or higher and you need to stitch over 2 threads. I've never done it though because it would be murder on my eyes.
