  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The pope is infallible on the teaching on what we call doctrine of the faith, Marian doctrine, Trinity, Resurrection. Not that the pope is sinless or cannot make a mistake like matters of science. Pope John Paul went to confession weekly.
Who did the Pope confess to, is there someone over his soul?

The Pope confesses to the same someone that you and I confess to. All confessions are to God. Catholics believe that Jesus gave the power to absolve sin to his apostles (see John 20). Apostolic succession has given us a way of continuing this lineage of confessors, who sit "In Persona Christi", in the person of Christ. So the Pope could confess to any validly ordained priest. I hope that this was an honest inquiry and not a rhetorical question that will start another "Auricular confession is wrong" type thread. Those threads seem juvenile to me. They attract people who want to debate a book they have never read or critique a film they have never seen. For my part I would rather wish that God bestow his infinite grace upon you today.

The pope confess to some other priest, as any Catholic (or Orthodox)

And the priest who lissen the confession is not "over" a soul, because only Christ is "over".

John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

You don't have to confess to someone 'over' you. Confession can be made by anyone to any priest. A bishop or a cardinal, and yes, even the holy pontiff, can make confession to any old parish priest.

In fact, confession borne of perfect contrition (i.e., guilt for sins out of love for God alone) doesn't even require private confession within the context of the sacrament. The sacrament is a blessing to God's church because it allows people who have imperfect contrition (i.e., guilt borne out of fear of punishment) an assured means of absolution.
