• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Ocd is ranked in the top ten be the world health organization as one most debilitating disease. It affects 2 % - 3% of people. It is known as the secret illness with the fact suffers tend to hide the battle one has in their mind. It affects both Christians and Non-Christians alike. If one looks at the history of Christian faith, one can come to the conclusion that this experience known as OCD has effective some of the most influential leaders of the Church. With this is mind, the Christian community today needs to address the question how do we understand and address it. Is this just an attack of Satin on the believer’s mind and we need confront it by pray and claiming the promises of God in the Bible? Suffers John Bunyon and Martin Luther viewed obsession with ungodly thoughts as attacked from Satin. One cannot deny the influence of Satin in attacking a believer‘s mind. The Apostle Paul states this clearly in describing the spiritual battle the believer experiences. However, it also demonstrates the believer‘s in that time period viewed illness both mental and physical were attributed to attacks from Satin. As a suffer, I have become to the believe that OCD is anxiety disorder in man. It is not moral issue but anxiety disorder in makeup of man. The more the suffers tries to understand and confront it in his mind the worse it gets. The fact it affects a devout Christian and non-believer indiscriminately demonstrates it is does not fall in category of being in disobedience to God’s word for having this condition. Today the Christian community appears to just address OCD from spiritual perceptive by pray and renewing one’s mind by God’s Word. I am not questioning the benefit of these practices. God can heal all diseases. In addition, God in his grace has provided medicine and skill of trained doctors to heal our body of diseases. There is also prevailing believe in the Christian community to address all mental illness by Christian psycho-therapy. This to have the suffer develop trusted relationship with a Christian therapist in which they explore how the suffer‘s past and up bring have influenced incorrect believes which have directly or indirectly caused the OCD. It is the believe if you address the root causes the OCD will go away. While this kind of theory has been effective in addressing other mental health issues, there is no evidence that this effective in treating OCD. As researchers today examine OCD , they are developing clearer understanding what group of people more likely to suffer from it. It affects people with certain personality types, there might be generic disposition, and there is chemical balance in one’s brain. They have discovered for the majority suffers they begin to show the symptoms in the early stage of adulthood and are triggered with major life changes. (I.e. leaving the family home, going into the workforce after college, getting married, having children) As researchers examine OCD there is still mystery of out is the cause. There is however clear evidence how to treat it. That is CBT and anti-depression medicine. It is my burden that the Christian community will come to embrace correct view what OCD is and how to provide treatment that has been scientifically proven to treat it effectively.

Often I truly believe that our visit here to earth is like a school field trip to learn lessons that would make us better people in preparation for the next life. I have failed miserably at times but I have learned many lessons and learned them well. I am so hopeful that I can remember them in the next life so I won't make those mistakes again. As tormenting and devastating as this illness has been for me, sometimes I consider it a gift. If I had not had it, I'm not sure I would have treated people very well or even known how bad rejection can feel. I might not have had sympathy for people in my situation. I can't stand to hear something say - Oh that person is crazy. I can't stand jokes about psychiatric hospitals. People have hung the phone up in my face and said - Don't ever call her again. My own family seems embarrassed of me. So I learned to smile at people, speak to people, give people my time, to care about people, to be a better person. I do believe that OCD is inherited. I have a really bad case because my Granny's sister on my Daddy's side had it and two people on my mother's side have it. I've heard that there is a chemical imbalance and that there is a misfire in a synapse I believe and that white matter shows up in the brain on an MRI. I am 61 years old now. The Bible tells us that man is given 70 years and if by reason of strength 80. I'm on my way. It goes by SO fast! This suffering is going to stop and there may even be a special ICU Unit in Heaven that people like us that suffered so badly can go to for a while to adjust to a life of such amazing comfort and love and peace and joy and be reassured that we are going to be ok!!!!!
