  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A Book.

I just ran across a title of a book that kinda stopped me dead in my tracks, titled:

"Why Do Christians Shoot Their Wounded?"

Anybody ever heard of it, or have any thoughts about the title of it and what it possibly means?

Thank you kindly.

Yes. You know that nice old man who sits two rows in front of you at church?

Suppose he went forward next week, and admitted to molesting his grand daughter. (He did time for it, and is now free.)

What do you suppose would soon be his fate around there.... and likely his whole family's?

No idea what it means, but I doubt it could apply to me or my peeps. We Anabaptists would never shoot anybody. Not even our enemies. Along with the first Church established by Christ and his apostles, we are the historical Peace Church. We have willingly given our lives for others time and time again and will continue to do so until there are none of us left or until, by our blood, the world is redeemed.

you're raising good points...care to elaborate?
Well, all of this can be understood if you ask one simple question.... Do we ever see any of "those" people in OUR church?

The answer tells it all.

it means that when we see people who are christian, we turn our back on them if they seem hurt or are failing in some way

it is part of our moden cultures obsession with "hypocrites"
every denomination does this, to some extent, in part i think Calvinism and its teaching of "once saved always saved" adds to this "shoot the wounded" mentality
it assumes that if someone is having doubts or struggles well that is just because their faith is not strong enough or they were never saved to start with

I do not want to make this all out to be a problem with Calvinism, like I said, all denominations do this to some extent

it seems that anyone who has standards but does not always live up to them is labeled a hypocrite
the culture just wants us to all be hedonists and no one to ever say anyone else is wrong....

I've seen it repeated over and over again, so many times, that I sometimes surprise myself that I still attend church.

Thank you kindly.

Reminds me when Paul talks about comforting one another with gentleness

Many people are hurting from betrayals, trials, sickness, etc. and some of these same people have been overlooked and rejected by the church could be intentionally but sometimes unintentionally

Why? not exactly sure but could be caused by confusion, misunderstanding, lack of concern/care, distractions, false doctrines, etc.

I heard a Bible teacher once say that "Hurting people hurt people" is this possibly fitting in to what you mentioned?

Thank you sister.

"shooting the wounded" is a term used for cutting off contact, ostracizing or other types of distancing yourself from people in your own group who have made mistakes, sinned, or just said something that was not politically correct
the idea is that if someone become inconvienant (wounded) you denounce them, cut them off, reject them (shoot them) rather then try to help them

one example from my own faith tradition would be Father Benedict Groeschel
he is a great priest and a noted psychologist and author
in an interview in 2012, he was asked about the abuse scandel in the Catholic Church, he talked about psycological reasons behind abuse, but he also mentioned, that he has seen young people, 14, 16, 18, go after and try to seduce priests, and that if the priest is going through some kind of nervous brakedown or other problems, this type of seduction can be very dangerous

well, after saying that, Fr. Groeschel was forced to retire early from his radio show and has been swept under the rug so to speak
he used to be very popular in Catholic media, mostly Radio but he also had numerous TV interviews and wrote many articles, now no one has heard from him because he pointed out something that was true, but did not go along with the politically correct narative

for the record, Fr.Groschel has never been acused of any kind of abuse, he is a respected priest and psychologist
