  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When I got back from Israel, I must have gone on and on about the olive trees because my father went out and got a Russian olive sapling (a kind that will thrive here in Missouri) and planted it in the yard for me as a surprise. That was so sweet. :)
I've never seen another one for sale here in all these years, so I wonder if he ordered it.

NP, ;)

We used to have Russian olives till some kind of disease attacked them and we had to cut them down. As it happens I attended a local fair this past Sunday and there was a booth seling bonsai. I happened to find a young olive that I am looking forward to training up. As far as the Russians, I believe you can still buy them but they are an invasive plant and not good on the surrounding area.

The Primer sounds like a GREAT idea to me!! ;)

It's a good thing Zayit showed up when she did to explain it, don't you think?
I was doing such a fine job. ;)

Since our threads show up on Google, you could give it some nice name like "Images of Judaism"? Zayit? Zayit? Do you have a better name?

me = Henny (LOL)

ROTFL!

Yes, Of coourse, there are times when it's a very good idea not to listen to me.
My neurological problems have been affecting my ability to communicate somewhat more than usual, and I lost heart because my misunderstood me in the worst possible ways; ones which hurt them.
Since I'm a person who would benefit from a thread like this, not one knowedgable to make one alone, especially during a period when I have increased problems, all I could think to do was illustrate with an entry from one of my Star Trek reference threads, but these don't, for the most part feature things which are precious and beautiful, or real, for that matter, so I felt that would be a failure, too.
Zayit, who obviously does have a G-d given gift for teaching, happened along at just the right time, somehow understood what I had in mind, illustrated it beautifully, and I thank her again for it. :)

Zayit or Zayith :)
Zayit - spelling from right to left: tzade yod tet (Tza-y-t)

Just to add to that, in Aramaic it's "Zaytâ," spelled zeyn-yoodh-tau-'âlaf.

Also, just lending a helping hand, Zayit's not spelled tzade yod tet, it's zeyn yod tau. :)

Peace!

Steve-o You are so correct. I can't believe I did that, on both letters to boot!

But hey, now I get to use this funky new smilie! :D

This is also an object lesson for Plan9, The Hebrew alphabet (or in Hebrew Alef-bet) has quite a few letters that when transposed start with the same Arabic ( English) alphabetic letter, not to mention the ones where there are two for one letter, one that is used if at the beginning or middle of a word and the other if used at the very end. There are other idiosyncrasies but I will try to make it fun. And Steve is here to check my spelling!

Do you have a list ready yet?

I will start the thread and transfer over the posts I have made already ( corrected of course Steve  ) and we can go from there.

Shalom (with a Shin) ;)

When I was in Israel, I was told that new immigrants spend hour hours a day learning Hebrew, and only four working at a job which will benefit the community in which they live. This is a clever idea, but it did give me the impression that learning Hebrew is a job in itself.

A list? Doh! *smacks forehead*

I think we might start with very basic, but vital items, like Torah scrolls, mantles, the menorah, mezuzahs (sp?). Things that are important in everyday Jewish life now. Things that people may see or hear about, and wonder what they are, but maybe are too shy to ask their Jewish friends and neighbors, and work up from there? Does that make sense, Zayit?

Sure does, I am currently in the process of making mezuzah holders so would be happy to make a post on that as soon as I can gather the data I have somewhere around my office. For claritys sake a Mezuzah is actually the little scroll with the verses written on it, not the pretty box it is contained in.:)

For now you may find some very interesting information about Torah scrolls in the 101 thread that I listed regarding Hebrew and roosters question.
