  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Just wondering, do Catholic's disagree with Luther on his 95 theses he posted? What happened to Johann Tetzel? Does the RC Church still use indulgences?

SP
PS: I just watched the movie and wondered, it's not a troll thread.

We disagree with his theses that disagreed with Catholic doctrine. Much of his theses which dealt with immoral behavior we agree and thats the reason for the Counter Reformation movement in the Church. We cleaned up our act and Martin had a lot of valid points. But when he went against founded Catholic teaching, that is where we disagree.

I am not sure what happened to Tezel.

The Church does not sell indulgences, but indulgences are still around.

http://www.the-pope.com/purg.html

I read through quickly and it seemed okay and explained it throughly. The Church is basically silent on indulgences nowadays.

Hope that helps and HOpe someone else can explain better maybe.

God bless you and God love you!

Does the RC Church still use indulgences?
Indulgences were abused, that doesn't mean they are in themselves a bad thing. The idea behind an indulgence, which, yes, the Church still has the authority to give, is that, with the right motive, temporal punishment after death will be either minimized or negated. For example, making a pilgrimage could have an indulgence attached to it if a prayer is said, the person is not attached to sin, and the person does it with the "right motive". The right motive is not that you will be free from punishment, but would be that the person truly wishes to serve God and be with Him eternally. We can't really know the person's motive, unless they verbally tell us or write it down (we don't read minds or souls).
What happened to Johann Tetzel?
Who?

I'd need to look through them again. I think some of the things he had issues with did truly need to be fixed within the Church. At the very least though, the way he went about to make the change was unnecessary.

I believe that reading the Bible for a half hour is an indulgence.
The indulgences were totally abused in the 16th century, and unfortunately, when many people think of indulgences, they think of the perversions back then. Indulgences actually make a lot of sense. They are part of personal sanctification.

SP-

Basically the bottom line is this...

Luther had some valid points. But in trying to clean the house, he ended up setting it on fire. Another analogy might be "throwing the baby out with the bathwater," you dig?

The is whole era is mix with legend, forklore, truth, and fiction.

There is discussion that Luther never nailed the 95 onto the church

It was like a slap in the face when the catholic Luther researcher, Erwin Iserloh, asserted in 1961 that the nailing of the theses to the door of the Castle Church belonged to the realm of legends.

History presents few characters that have suffered more senseless misrepresentation, even bald caricature, than Tetzel. "Even while he lived stories which contained an element of legend gathered around his name, until at last, in the minds of the uncritical Protestant historians, he became the typical indulgence-monger, upon whom any well-worn anecdote might be fathered" (Beard, "Martin Luther", London, 1889, 210). For a critical scholarly study which shows him in a proper perspective, he had to wait the researches of our own time, mainly at the hands of Dr. Nicholas Paulus, who is closely followed in this article.

Could the same be said for ALL history, where misrepresentation of fact become caricature, is it limited only to certain eras?:groupray:
