I have just about given up on this show completely!
I have had a love hate relationship with this show for so long! On the one hand, I really liked that the characters were not cookie cutter good guys, always knowing what to say, always doing the right thing.
On the other hand - I have lost patience with the father, a preacher who almost never discusses God and has done some really bizarre things, the middle daughter, also a preacher who is the most self centered character I've seen in a while, and the fact that most of the lessons that are learned are from outside this preachers' family, not within.
Also, they have missed a great many opportunities to portray Christian values within this family without being preachy, while making it seem that these Christian values are barely a part of their life.
Now, last night may have been the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Not only has Simon been making choices that have put him in danger and made purity values of Christians seem unimportant and irrelevant to the unchurched, but he and his girlfriend then went on to put a different but equally irresponsible spin on the issue of intimacy before marriage.
first - Simon sleeps with a variety of young women
then...he has a scare with pregnancy
then... he has a new scare with STD's
then... he makes a deal with God to wait until he's married to have sex again
then...his girlfriend doesn't understand why he won't sleep with her
(after all, she says, that's the difference between a friend and a
boyfriend, isn't it?)
then... he tells her he made a deal with God to wait until he is married
... she says do you think we might get married some day
...he says yeah, maybe
...she says are you asking me to marry you?
... he says, hmm, that would make us committed wouldn't it?
...she says yes to the question and the [proposal]
... and they decide that now it's ok to sleep together.
What a disappointment - just when I think they couldn't possibly make it worse ...
