Hey, just want to put it out there and ask a question I've asked on other forums. I just want to get a general consensus on this issue...a 50 year old Christian guy wearing...earrings. What is your opinion of this?

The Bible states (I'm paraphrasing) "Men shall not put on women's attire and women shall not put on men's attire". I don't class earrings as "women's" attire any more than I class pants as 'men's attire".

Earrings are usually considered feminine attire, but I don't agree. Like most jewelry choices, there are masculine versions and feminine versions and this applies to earrings as much as anything else.

I am soon turning 51 and I wear earrings in both ears. Small discreet studs. I am straight and am married and have a teenage son. My left ear I pierced back when I was 21 (in 1986) when guys only pierced their left ear (unless they were gay, then the right ear was pierced).

In the last several years this distinction has lost its meaning and earrings in both ears for men has become more and more acceptable. So I took the plunge last fall and pierced my right ear and now sport earrings in both ears. I do it only because I think it enhances my look and style. I'm not trying to look vain. I think the earrings look good on me. I also wear a wedding ring, another silver ring, a chain bracelet and a chain necklace.

I have had only 1 negative comment about my earrings(from an older woman at church) but everyone else has either commented that it looks good, or they haven't commented at all.

I'm just looking for some feedback or opinions, and will take it as just that, an opinion. I have no intention of getting rid of the earrings until I don't feel like wearing them anymore. But I'm just curious what you think.

Hi; we talked a bit on the other thread also; but studs in both ears has become widespread and customary among men also.

So remind me; did you say your son intends to get them for both ears also, despite his mom's and maybe grandmother's disapproval? or maybe this disapproval is more muted and realistic now.

No, he's not interested in getting his ears pierced. On the weekend I was bold and wore thick small black hoops and he noticed that I had changed things up. but he didn't talk about getting them for himself. I can see that day coming, but right now it's not a priority for him. I think his friends at school look at earrings as a "gay" thing, but I don't see why. That's usually the older people who still think that.

I have no problem with men wearing tasteful jewelry. But beware of piercing of any type.It can become an obsession, even addictive. The enemy likes bloodletting for some reason. Your body is the temple for the Holy Spirit to dwell in, so don't forget that.People forget that and have placed multiple piercings and tattoos on their temple (body).
I guess the Old Testament bondservant picture involved piercing an ear. Psalm 40: 'Mine ears has thou opened' (opened=Hebrew, digged, i.e., pierced) is a Messianic reference.

If he did, do you think it would suit him, like you reckon it suits you?

the popularity i think depends on which social circles that a person travels in.
lots of bikers and wrestling fans have them, rock musicians as well, or people in the entertainment industry.
but i don't think they're often seen in the business world, or the legal world either, for that matter.

I'm sure that that some ppl might remove them in office hours. Just as many women would cover their tattoos in a business or legal environment, right?

PS:

So does she herself wear earrings?

Yes, she does. When she saw me at church and noticed my earrings she first asked me why I had them. Well the obvious reason is that I like them. She then proceeded to tell me it was a sign of vanity and rebellion.
But she was dressed nicely and had earrings on and other jewelry.

Why is it OK for a woman to wear earrings but when a guy wears them it's a sign of vanity? I don't understand that.
this was partly the reason why I asked this question on here. I wanted to know what other Christians felt about men wearing earrings.

She is from the "old school" who thinks that earrings are for women only. I don't agree. I think men should be able to wear earrings just as much as women.

it wasn't too long ago that women didn't wear pants. Now it's very common. It will only be a matter of time before earrings will be accepted as appropriate mens attire. its nearly universally accepted now but we can go a bit further I think.

Well, maybe if she refers to it again, you could mention that when moms and their daughters started wearing 2 earrings in each ear, this was about the time when their sons started wearing one little ring in one ear (of course, now they are mostly worn in both ears). I guess it was kind of a matter of justice: if a mom wore 2 rings in each ear, it was hard to refuse a son even one little earring in one ear, right?

Maybe she is a conservative lady who only ever wears one ring in each ear, and has never gotten used to the double piercing thing. (Mind you, this custom is now very well established: for example, a 19 year old and her mom aged, say 53, in 1979 who might have gotten their ears double pierced, would now be aged 56 and 90 respectively; it's really very long established.)

yes, she is very conservative. and I respect her opinion about guys with earrings. I just don't happen to agree with it. I don't have a problem with someone not agreeing with my opinion (contrary to what some people on this forum think).

and I don't have a problem with people who don't think earrings are appropriate for males. It's their opinion and they're entitled to it.

but that's a good argument you put forth above. If women can get double (or triple) pierced ears why can't guys have at least one piercing in each ear? It's only a matter of time before no one really notices guys with earrings except to compliment them on how it looks (like any article of fashion). There has been huge strides in this area even in the last 10 years or so. Most people don't notice my earrings (the woman at church didn't say anything for 4 months). and if they do notice them they don't care that I have them.

On this forum and others that seems to be the general consensus.

Maybe she is more conservative than your mother-in-law in this respect; or maybe - rather - your mother-in-law just prefers to keep quiet.
