National polling is pretty much irrelevant.

Does it till you exactly where the rise in popularity has occured? For all we know it has occured in Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma... places the Republicans will win every election, places where they don't need to be enticing people to vote right now. I don't think it is too hard to believe that Palin has had a bit of an effect in rekindling the enthusiasim of the Christian-right in that Republican heartland.

What is more interesting is the state by state breakdown, which you can see here:

http://electoral-vote.com/

Also of interest is the betting odds listed with today's update - the money certainly seems to favour Obama in the swing states and right now the polling is too.

We have seen presidential candidates win the majority of votes across the country and still lose the election. Some votes in certain states are going to be more important than others. National polling is therefore not the best way to guage how well a candidate is doing.

There haven't been any new polls for electoral-vote to go off of, so that's not a reliable source post-RNC until some new polls are taken (particularly swing states).

Right now McCain popularity overall is up, but how this would effect the electoral remains to be seen.
