• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

30 days of abstinence

Is there really something to the notion that the brain chemistry life-way that's been hard wired into our brains by masturbating to pornography can be altered and stopped by 30 days of abstinence? I know that I haven't been able to go 30 days in a row, but the most I've been able to go is about just over a week, maybe 2 or 3 times during a month. I hope to get better.

There is no silver bullet or magical number. That will be just hopeful thinking for most people.

If there is no silver bullet then make the silver bullet. :liturgy:

If you told someone who masturbates once a week, to touch once a day for 30 days straight, do you not think their subsequent behavior will be affected by this? We live life moment by moment, and we build our habits brick by brick, and we destroy them hack by hack. Many fight the same battle, and an active mind aids them. Avoid temptation, run it off in physical activity, and keep your mind active with other things. If we throw our thoughts in another direction, backed by total concentration and energy, we can prevail. We must be the light in our life, and wherever there is not light, darkness fills. If our mind is being a light with knowledge and learning, there is no room for the darkness of sin. If we are idle in mind, sin will come, and if we are idle in body at this part, it will move us to its will.

At the core of such things is desire, it must be curbed. If we wake up everyday trying to please ourselves, we will not leave enough room for God's will. Relinquishing personal desire is hard, but it too, is part of the path to victory. I do not know where you are in this battle, I have made some progress, but there is still much to be done before the final victory. Do not look to others, jealousy can lead to downfall. Do we all not see or know of others around us who satisfy their desires? No, we do not see others satisfy their desires, we only see slaves satisfy their masters. We have only one God whom we must serve, and his beauty and purity has no use for this.

Good luck and God bless.
