  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,

IMO you have to look at a bigger chunk of this scripture. 2 Tim 2:22-26;

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

From this context, you will see it talks about Evil Desires of YOUTH and rightly so, because Timothy was young and inexperienced. Unfortunately, it seems to be people of my age group that seem to fall into this trap and would try to drag Timothy into it. Verses 25 & 26 tell Timothy HOW to deal with this type of interaction. Paul was notorious for getting to the heart of the matter. He himself admits in his writings, that he is much more aggressive in his writings, than he is in person. This seems to be human nature for most of us as well and is easily fallen into on places such as these forums. We must always try to deal with ALL people circumspectly.

A good verse to practice , I prefer it in the KJV . It is better to avoid foolish and ignorant questions because they are bait for an argument that will not produce any good results , often resulting in heated arguments etc... As christians we are not to act like that but rather to be kind and patient , gentle character , so avoid getting into those kinds of situations . Look at the question and determine if it is foolish or ignorant , if so avoid it.

If the person is truly seeking God they can be lead or instructed , but it must be done in meekness and patience , Only God can give them the understanding that can bring them to the truth , and He can use you if you do it as said in these verses . But He may not either , so do not think that all will go well . It may if God is in it .

Reagrding Pauls how of things: He describes the qualities of life expected of a teacher here.
- avoiding foolish and stupid quarrels (e.g. not overly defensive or threatening)
- kind
- able to teach
- not resentful
- gentleness

This is the kind of person who can meet an obstinate or confused or belligerant man and diffuse the situation with a wise answer that produces peace rather than anger.

But yes you are right the passions and hotheadedness of youth are in the background and set the context for the whole discussion as the young Timothy is urged to:
pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
