  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

:wave: Greetings from a sunny South Africa :cool:

I found this interesting comment regarding 2 Peter 3:18. Hope you enjoy it as well.

" "Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." True knowledge is not some esoteric information concerning a form or formula, a rite or ritual; nor is it some secret order or password, as the Gnostics claimed. It is to know Jesus Christ as He is revealed to man in the Word of God. This is the secret of life and of Christian living (see John 17:3).
Notice how Peter uses the name—"our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." How precious the Lord Jesus had become to this rough, old fisherman! As J. Niebor has well said, "He obeyed Him as Lord, he loved Him as Saviour, he adored Him as the greatest human, Jesus, he worshipped Him as the mighty anointed Son of God, Christ."

Peter concludes his swan song with this paean of praise: "To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen."

Oh, my friend, that you and I might know Jesus Christ! Someone has put it like this:

We mutter and sputter;
We fume and we spurt;
We mumble and grumble;
Our feelings get hurt.

We can’t understand things;
Our vision grows dim,
When all that we need
Is a moment with Him.

—Author unknown

Only as we spend time with Him, as He is revealed in His Word, can we grow in our knowledge of Him."

I think it also means that we are to grow. God expects us to mature in the faith and to progress, not just remain carnal like babes.

He has given us grace, and while we may stumble or fall occassionally, we should keep growing and learning. Take the opportunities presented by grace to develop our character as a Christian and to become one with Him. And that not only through God's Word, but also through intimate communion with Him. Talk to Him, listen to Him, learn from Him...

Peter is saying we all need to grow, become ever more mature, as he described earlier in this same epistle
(2 Pet 1:5-8 NIV) For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; {6} and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; {7} and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. {8} For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He tells us to become more mature in two things: grace and knowledge of Christ. I've heard grace described as "the power to do what God's law demands." But as we grow in that grace, we also need to grow in intimate knowledge of Jesus. Not just acquaintance, but deep, intimate knowledge.

Compare:

Col 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

Col 1:11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

Col 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

Col 1:13
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Increasing in the knowledge of God - This is another way in which we may walk worthy of the Lord, and so as to please him. It is by endeavoring to become better acquainted with his true character. God is pleased with those who desire to understand what he is; what he does; what he purposes; what he commands.

A Brethren IN CHRIST said:
But grow in grace , and in the experiencial knowledge of our Lord, and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and into the age.. amen

I enjoy this verse what do you thing God is saying here!

I think that it is also important to consider the immediate context of the surrounding verses when looking at 2 Peter 3:18.

1 Peter 3:13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Final Words
14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

We are warned by Peter that many doctrines taught by Paul are hard to understand and that the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction. Just a small thought.
