It's been around six days since the shooting. There is already a push among state Premiers (roughly equivalent to US State Governors) to meet to discuss tightening up gun laws across the country following suggestions from State Police Commissioners.

Do you agree with these suggestions?

I don't. People will always kill people. If you take away their guns, they use knives. If you take away the knives, they will use their fists.

Considering the very low amount of gun death in Australia, I think that everything neccessary in regards to gun control has already been done. This wasn't caused by too many guns in the hands of citizens, this was caused by those "sovereign citizen" ideas. People who subscribe to such ideas will 3D print guns or buy them illegally if neccessary. The problem are not the guns in the hands of those citizens, it's the ideas in their heads.

The very low rate of gun deaths in Australia is largely the result of restrictive gun laws introduced in 1996 following a major incident

We're now finding that, over time, the laws have been watered down (by our standards) by inconsistencies between states. Gun laws are a state, as opposed to federal, issue.

There is overwhelming public support for extremely tight restrictions on gun ownership here. This latest incident will drive public demand for action to ensure loopholes and inconsistencies between states are minimised.

There's been an unusual update on this tragic event. A man has been arrested in Arizona USA presumably for some sort of internet complicity in the shooting of three people (including two police officers) in Wieambilla in Queensland, Australia on December 12, 2022 (very close to a year ago now).

A man arrested in the US state of Arizona in connection with the religiously-motivated terrorist attack in Wieambilla last year sent the shooters "Christian end-of-days" ideological messages in the months leading up to it, police have revealed.

Wow, thanks for the update! A little more info:

Although both said they had never met in person, Gareth Train and “Don” repeatedly refer to one another as “brothers” in online posts. Videos and posts made by the men betray similar preoccupations: an apparent hatred of police, fundamentalist Christian ideology, and a loose connection to beliefs linked to the so-called sovereign citizen conspiracy movement.

In the Train couple’s final video, filmed not long before they were killed by police, Stacey Train told “Don” they will “be home soon” and that they love him.

Immediately after the shooting, “Don” posted his own video.

“The devils came for them to kill them, and they had to kill the devils themselves and are now on the run,” he said.

Two indictments were issued by a grand jury in Tucson, Arizona for interstate threats. One of those related to comments posted online in December 2022 allegedly inciting violence in connection with the incident at Wieambilla. Police did not confirm what the second was in regards to.

The man has been charged under US law and there is currently no application in place to extradite him to Australia.

Coincidentally - yesterday's meeting of the National Cabinet (all Australian State Premiers and the Prime Minister) announced federal funding for a National Firearms Register.

The register is a direct consequence of the Wieambilla incident where the perpetrator's access to guns came about through inconsistencies between state gun laws.

The effect of the register will be a further restriction on gun ownership and standardisation of ownership laws across the country.

The national cabinet agreed to implement a national firearms register — a move the government said was the most substantial update to firearm management systems in almost 30 years.
"The register will address significant gaps and inconsistencies with the way firearms are managed across all jurisdictions," the prime minister said.
The national cabinet will work towards the register being fully operational within four years.
