This is why modern day feminism has skewed what women think of marriage. They see any move by a man as a powerplay. Like all men are simply out to control their wives. That aside I almost never hear anyone say "Mr. John Smiths wife!" anymore. I introduce my wife as her first name (unless she introduces herself of course).
It doesn't necessarily mean that a woman is perceiving that her *husband* is engaging in any powerplay---it's often more about how our culture perceives her (her husband doesn't normally refer to her as "Mrs [his first name & last name]"....it's other people.
Wasn't Jesus a counter-culture kind of guy? I wonder why there's such resistance [and calling it a 'modern' thing ] to perceptions that include a wife being more of an equal instead of merely an extension of her husband. ISTM that's something Christ focused on a lot while on this earth [redeeming women in their value and importance].
