FOXNews.com - EXCLUSIVE: Alert Issued for 17 Afghan Military Members AWOL From U.S. Air Force Base

"I can confirm that 17 have gone missing from the Defense Language Institute," said Gary Emery, Chief of Public Affairs, 37th Training Wing, at Lackland AFB. "They disappeared over the course of the last two years, and none in the last three months."

who the hell is running their security?! When are we going to adjust our foreign policy? When are people going to realize we are at war?

Somebody better be fired already.

DLI is not a prison. The way you get "escape" is by not showing up for class the next day.

"The official added that this is not the first time foreign trainees have gone missing, and suggested it was more an immigration violation than a national security threat."

What is your thought here? That because they're Afghani, they're automatically a terrorist threat?

17 foreign nationals running around the country unaccounted for is indeed a security issue. It is an immigration issue. The two are more linked than most people seem to admit.

Given the nature of how the 9/11 terrorists got into play I find the situation unacceptable.

This is true. However there is a breach of contract and a breach of protocol at issue.

Yes, but you are suggesting a radical change to foreign policy, internal security, and firing somebody because a handful of foreign nationals taking English classes dropped out of school and didn't want to go back home.

I'm curious, what radical "change" is the OP proposing to foreign policy and internal security? You make it sound like a simple matter of a few people cutting a high school English class. You don't see how this could be significantly more than that?

No, I see it as college students overstaying their student visas, which happens by the thousands every year. We're picking on these 17 because they come from a culture and country we have demonized (remind me again how many 9/11 terrorists were Afghan?). There are better ways to stock your sleeper cell than sending assets to a defense institute.

I am appalled by how little some of you think of this situation. No wonder this nation is going to hell.

I'm out.
This just in!!! Someone didn't want to return to a warzone! Updates throughout the evening.

So that makes everything okay? I don't think anyone is "demonizing" these 17 students. And, no, none of the 9/11 terrorists were Afghan. Stocking a sleeper cell has little to do with the method they use to get here. By any means possible, I would think is the way things work. The 17 people in question may, indeed, have nothing to do with terrorism. The point is that they did it. If they could do it by going to classes on a US Military installation, how easy is it to do by other methods? It isn't so much that these Afghan students went AWOL, it's more that it was so easy and no one seems to be concerned in the least. If things are going to be that lax, maybe they should just no longer have the program available to anyone.

Well if I was coming from the Afghan warzone and I had the opportunity to try and "make a run for it" in America, I just might.

Just saying...

Now that being said, we should locate these men ASAP. While I would like to doubt it was anything sinister, I could easily imagine some Taliban or Al-Qaeda infiltration of the army, getting here, then making a run for it with something terrible planned.
