Women and children are the most abused of all society's. I will have to be aware of where the things I buy are made.

About 246 million children worldwide have jobs which take up all or most of the time they could spend in school.

Wow :sigh:

.....it would be nice if injustice could be countered with boycott, but it would still not solve the problem which is induced by poverty, low wages, lack of opportunity or educational progress in the first place. One cannot simply expect societies to change without infusing the money first which would allow people to feed and house themselves without being exploited. Good jobs are simply not available to the parents and in many cases therefore the children are sold into servitude or prostitution. China before communism was worse in that respect. The standards of modern western society simply do not apply to much of the world. But even in North America you have a situation where an estimated 2.5 million "children" under the age of 18 are homeless. Many of those individuals end up being exploited as well in sweatshops or as drug dealers or prostitutes. The failure of both church and state to deal adequatelywith these problems, speaks to the moral failure of human civilization.

China and India are two countries I'm wary of! They do NOT treasure their children!
...........sorry but you are way off base, and evidently need to do some research. Life is cheap in much of the world out of necessity and lack of options...and not as you surmise because people value their children less.

Hi, This is one major reason why people should be careful where they buy products because children could be making them. For a example China.

Robert.
If you are going to boycott products based on appaling employment practices by the company making it, just be aware that you would need to boycott more or less the entirety of the third world.

EDIT: And why are you so obsessed with China? The article didn't even mention China! They seemed concerned about South Africa, Brazil and Indonesia.

A boycott will not happen. From the Right-China presents a sizable trade market. From the Left- China has an Economic system that we should strive for (quasi-communism).
Not to mention so much stuff comes from China that it would be crippling if it was tried.

Of course, we shouldn't even be talking about China in a thread about boycotts based on child labour since the linked article made absolutely no mention or reference to it at all. South Africa and Indonesia look like larger problems, If we are going to use child labour as a basis for boycotts they are the countries we should look at.

Nationwide boycotts may not happen. Personal boycots may. Compagnies have been known to change their policies based on extensive boycotts, and get a clear charter and a tighter control on who delivers and makes their goods. IKEA and H&M are examples, and still they are under watch of fair trade and East/ West groups.

Consumers have a lot of power, and every right (and in my belief event he duty) to use that power to enforce ethics on the compagnies they buy from.
