Did you ever ride the "Maid of the Mist"? AND see the horsehoe falls, and rainbow falls, and when it is all lit up? And were you on the Canadian side or the U.S side of the falls? Did you go over the "Peace Bridge" and isn't it awesome? It never ceases to amaze me the beauty the falls hold and all that is there. If you have never rode the "Maid of the Mist" I recommend it. That is a blast to get right up into the falls.

I didn't go on the "maid of the Mist" because my Mother is disabled , otherwise I would have gone .
I was on the Canadian side not the American side , I think the Canadians have the best view and I think I am right , they have the best out of the two falls ....... but it's all awesome , and there is much history etc about them ........ I think Blonden the famous tight rope walker went across them.
He said to the crowd "who believes Blonden the world famous tight rope walker can walk back over the tight rope " and the crowd shouted back "we believe !! we believe !! we believe !! "
Then he said "who believes I can do it with someone on my shoulders" ?
And the crowd yelled back "we believe !! we believe !! we believe !! "
and Blonden said "who will be that person ?"
a deadly hush fell upon the crowd and from the silence stepped forward one small man and he said "I believe"

that is like so many who say they believe in God , or Jesus Christ , but do they/WE really believe ?

I learned about this from a preacher called Tony Campoplo. ;)

These Niagra Fall pics are the best! I went to college up by the falls for a year in Buffalo NY and loved visiting the Canadian side of the Falls every weekend while I was there! They have a few neat zoos up there too, and the Lady of Fatima Shrine in Youngstown NY. I remeber a catholic college friend taking me over there and showing me all the little memorials for all the saints...
There are also a few quite large Indian Reservations around the falls...

Yes indeed you are right "freespirit2001" that there are many Indian reservations in that area and down through to the PA border. There is a college below Buffalo called "St. Bonaventure" where there also many memorials for all the saints as well. Actually I used to live that area and my daughter was christened in a Catholic church and attended a Catholic school although I was protestant and I spent many hours on the grounds and some of the territory.

Cyg, Didn't mean to hijack your thread. And you are right about the falls on the Canadian side being much prettier..I don't mean to be rude to my own country but I do hope that I can give the objective opinion. I love to spend time on the Canadian side of the falls but I think it is because I like the customs and going over the peace bridge and all of that but the view is definitely different and distinctively pretty and breathtaking on the Canadian side of the falls. :) And rachewil15 you would love it if you ever get to go. It is pretty awesome.

Cyg, are you having ISP problems again ???? Your presence is missed here!

No, not me, bill :) ..........Cygnus will be offline for a little while soon.

I was reading an interesting article today about various lighthouses in Scotland, Cygnus. Have you ever been inside a lighthouse? I haven't. There was a photo of all the stairs you have to climb - looked like heaps and heaps of them going round and round and up and up. :D

Hi JS
sfunny you should mention lighthouses , because when I can I listen to a Play on the radio , BBC radio 4 does them daily and I hadn't heared one for about 6 Months because I was busy with other things, but on Thursday just gone there was an excellent play , and Yes about a Lighthouse! :D

I haven't been up any , they seem a bit too remote for me and I think I heared on the news just last week that they are going to close Britains last one soon ?

I like them , they are fine buildings with character , also a great symbol .

Here's a pic of one in Norfolk , Hunstanton Lighthouse , I see it every year , wouldn't it be something to retire into one :D
Not as big or as grand as some , but what the hey , it still has character ...

 What a beautiful British lighthouse! We have a few beautiful ones along the Chesapeake Waterways here that are local monuments to all the watermen and oystermen along the shores here...Also...Virginia and the Carolinas have quite a few great ones on the ocean...I seem to like them on the ocean...

Where I came from in NJ, we had a place called the Highlands that overlooked the ocean and from the top there are two twin lighthouses, where you can see NYC, Manhattan and Staten Island from. (I'll have to try to get those pictures!)

This lighthouse was built in 1828 and fully completed in 1862. It faces the western entrance to the New York Bay.

You can see the view of New York Bay with this beach cam:
http://www.highlandsnj.com/opsail/html/OpsailCamFull.html
(Its a winter wonderland on the water now!)

I have a LIVE view of the beaches in Naples and Ft.Myers, Florida here:

( I hope these take some of the brrrr out of the weather for some! )

Some of my german ancestors came from Kiel, Germany. Here are some lighthouses pictures on the Baltic Sea from Kiel. (And a favorite beach sunset picture)

Hello, Cygnus :)

Yes, strange that my question tied in so closely with the play you just listened to..........anyway, I found a pic of New Zealand's oldest active lighthouse. It's called Tiritiri Matangi and is located on Tiritiri Island. It was actually prefabricated in Plimlico, England. Here it is..........

Tiritiri.jpg

Yes, I think I would find life in a lighthouse a bit isolated.......we like living in the city and being surrounded by other people. ;)

Here's a photo taken by a skilled photographer called Gene Wilburn. He has captured beautifully a lighthouse earning its keep in foggy conditions. I particularly like the way we see the bold, clear lines of the tree in the foreground and the way everything becomes progressively dimmer and less clear as the fog begins to envelop everything in the background.

Cool photo, isn't it, Cygnus? :)
