1. Parenting children requires delight and discipline; a vision toward what is good and a commitment to quietly die to yourself.
2. Your children are living souls, but life must be chosen. Teach them early to choose well (Deut 30:20).
3. Every rule you make will afford your kids ample opportunity to break it. Make good rules, and enforce every rule you make (where law increased, sin increased all the more, in order that the fullness of grace may be known).
4. Even before they can speak, role play the response you want your child to use. From tone to wording, sincerely feed them their lines so your kids know what you expect (e.g. child: “I want that,” parent: “Can you say, ‘May I please…?’”
.
5. Give a sincere response in every circumstance; never use sarcasm.
6. Time and focus are a child’s currency, not money. Every ounce of time spent and emotional focus given will yield a pound of joy to both you and your child.
7. In discipline, always tenderly appeal to a child’s spirit with a vision toward what is good (e.g. “was that a kind thing to say?” “were you building up or tearing down?” "Does God take things to hurt someone or does He give things to help someone?”
8. The heart will grow every seed that is planted, and the eyes and ears are the window to the heart. Tenaciously limit the input of movies and video games for as long as you can.
9. Gently lead your children into green pastures; don’t let them bloom wherever they plant.
10. Every season of parenting has a lesson and a treasure. Don’t wish it away and don’t miss it.
And, one extra
Praise the Lord every morning for the blessing of children!
