Are there Biblical examples of fasting where the fasting is only giving up a single favorite food (or type of food) and not where one abstains from all food?

I doubt it. But, there are no biblical examples of the driving cars to church or playing a piano or organ during worship, but I doubt we'd have much to argue about these things.

Well I got a lesson on ash Wednesday, years ago.

When I arrived to work at a lady's house,I noticed the smear on her for head.

After a while I mustered the gumption to say, Ma'am uh you have a bit of dirt on your head.

Not the reply I wanted, snarling like I was a idiot (may have been back then) she replied its ash Wednesday!

In those days Steve Martin came to mind,WELL EXCUUUSE ME!

To this day why do they smear ash on there foreheads?

5One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. 6He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. 7For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. 8For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.-Romans 14

Does the most interesting man in the world also not clothe the naked and give food to the hungry because Christ's righteousness is enough? Seems more pompous and boastful than anyone doing works for show could achieve.

Those things are done naturally because of who we are.

"It is our duty to be “perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Cor. 7:1); to be “growing in grace” every day (1 Pet. 2:2; 2 Pet. 3:18); to be “renewing our inward man day by day” (2 Cor. 4:16). Now, this cannot be done without the daily mortifying of sin. Sin sets its strength against every act of holiness and against every degree we grow to.Let not that man think he makes any progress in holiness who walks not over the bellies of his lusts. He who does not kill sin in his way takes no steps toward his journey’s end"

Good question and this website can answer it better than I. It's a simple down to earth article, not too long, concerning your question. :)

Why do Catholics put Ashes on our heads on Ash Wednesday? - LifeTeen.com for Catholic Youth

Sure it's a "Catholic" thing. Although many denominations do it as well.
I honestly with everyone will read this to get a good answer to this wonderful question. It is biblical btw.
I know it's foreign to a lot of protestants.
Just give it a chance, the article, that is.
