• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Do you often crave chocolate, cookies, or candy? If so, you're not alone. Sugar cravings are incredibly common because humans are born with an innate desire for sweets. Simple carbs, like sugar, light up areas of the brain that release endorphins ("feel-good hormones"), making treats like birthday cake or holiday cookies even more irresistible. But while a little indulgence is fine, consuming too much added sugar can harm your health.

The average American adult eats about 17 teaspoons (68 grams) of added sugar every day—nearly triple the amount recommended by the American Heart Association of 6 teaspoons (25 grams) per day for women and 9 teaspoons (36 grams) for men. Diets high in added sugar have been linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, systemic inflammation, and other health issues. A study published in Nutrition Research and Practice found that individuals with higher added sugar intake were more likely to experience negative health outcomes and even an increased risk of death. Notably, naturally sweet foods like fruit didn't carry the same risks.

If you're looking to curb your sweet tooth while still supporting your health, nutrient-packed foods can be the answer. The following options not only help manage sugar cravings but also provide your body with essential fuel. Here are 10 foods I frequently turn to when I get a craving for something sweet.

These do the job for me. Taking them and putting them on a plate on the dining table will stop me on the way to the pantry or refrigerator.

Putting out berries or grapes works too.

Yummy - I love cherry tomatoes the only problem is I love them covered in salt, vinigar & pepper.

I consume lots of refined sugar at 60 grams daily nearly twice over the max recommended for men because of unique hydration needs and as additional source of cheap calories.

I keep healthy mainly from exercise ,11 to 16 hours per week of moderate to high intensity interval cardio in a fasted state, and keeping my meal portion sizes small. I think the small portion sizes helps even things out in terms of high sugar consumption.

Now in my mid forties, my blood pressure is still well within normal range at 111 systolic / 71 diastolic without taking any meds. I'm underweight as a matter of fact and I only weigh 51 kg. In order to keep my bones and muscles strong despite being underweight, foods rich in calcium and protein are part of my diet such as sardines and dairy. I also lift weights, perform calisthenics, and do basic figure skating jumps on inline skates.

I think sugar gets way too bad rep. Yet the body craves it for a reason. What's unnatural is having too little physical activity. With sufficient physical activity and assuming the metabolism is not yet permanently impaired by many years of sedentary lifestyle, sugar is a fuel and a very good one for physical activities.

A little bit of added salt is not a problem if you have a physically active lifestyle and sweat often like from exercise. You lose some body salt when you sweat and you need to replenish that lost salt.

People who are physically active and also on low-sodium diets are at risk of sodium deficiency.
