Greetings Chalnoth How do you explain electron spin or is there a good link for it?

Well, as near as I can tell it's a purely quantum-mechanical effect that is impossible to be explained adequately. Some like Stephen Hawkin's description in "A Brief History of Time", but I'm not so sure. Every attempt to explain the concept of spin in a way that is understandable is pretty much bound to be inaccurate or incomplete in some measure.

I'm not aware of "Hawking's" branes. Are you perhaps talking about branes in string theory? They're nothing more than extended objects of various dimensions. A 1-brane would be a line. A 2-brane would be a sheet. A 3-brane would be a 3-dimensional volume (such as our own observable universe). Branes up to 11 dimensions are possible in supersymmetric string theories.

I don't think they were. I could be wrong, I suppose, as I'm not a string theorist, but I'm not aware of Hawking having anything to do with the introduction of branes into string theory.

But I do find it rather amusing that among some string theorists, they have chosen to denote the number of dimensions associated with a particular brane with the variable "p", which, in turn, makes a p-dimensional brane a p-brane.
