As one of our good modern preachers has said (paraphrased): The sentence starts with the word "therefore"—what is it there for?!

I think it is saying be in your 'right' mind and not drunken.

Usually the word 'therefore' means to read what's before it so that you know what the 'therefore' is referring to.

Not always. Somethings in the bible are written in English t hat makes no sense. Example: proverb 10:1

I will explain what I mean some other time on a regular keyboard. It could have something to do with bible versions. I use nasb, I used to use niv, but I recall how that proverb didn't seem to make proper English sense. It used to bug me totally and I did not read the proverbs. I do now. I do understand it, it's just HOW it's written, or said.

The first 12 verses do a pretty good job of defining it as the revelation of Jesus Christ...whom they had not yet seen, and also the promises of God through the prophets and since then Jesus and the apostles, of those things that awaited them.
