Jesus teaches us that there is something far more fundamental to our sinfulness than the actual sins we commit. Our sins do not make us sinful. Rather, we commit sins because at the very center of our lives, we are sinful. Sin has invaded the inner recesses of our personalities. If we do not understand our sin, we will not understand the kind of Savior we need. In 1 Tim. 4:7, we are to discipline (ourselves) for the purposes of godliness. God uses means of grace to sanctify us, sanctification is entirely the work of God the Holy Spirit who imparts to us the very life of Christ. Sanctification is also the work of the Holy Spirit, but it involves a response on our part so that we as believers are actively involved in the process. We will never be free of sin until we get a new body.
