‘Praying for Armageddon’

Hi, I’m new here and have been prompted to seek your thoughts after watching ‘Storyville: Praying for Armageddon’ on the BBC iPlayer. Has anyone else seen it? The programme features Christians in America influencing their government to provide military support to Israel, thinking this will help fulfil Bible prophecy and initiate Christ’s return and Armageddon. How do American Christians feel about their government acting in this way? And why are these Christians determined to help a nation that doesn’t even believe Jesus is the Messiah?

I have not seen the movie but it sounds like antisemitic propaganda.

Most American Christians believe in the just war theory.

Most Americans support Israel because of the idea of the just war, even if they aren't Christian.

Israel gets American support because they are our allies and they are a sovereign nation who have the right of self defense.

Israel gets Christian support for the sake of Christ. Christ was a Jewish Rabbi, and we are still Jews, we are just Jews who believe the Messiah came.

Denying Christ is the Messiah does not change the blood, are any of your cousins unsaved? We have some through Christ.

Hi, I’m new here...
Wait what? You joined in 2006 and this is your first post?!

Anyway, sounds like some BBC malarkey. In a nation of over three and a half million people you'll find some with wacky ideas.

Many conservative Evangelical Christians believe that the modern state of Israel fulfills biblical prophecy. In the present political climate of the United States they exert considerable influence on our foreign policy. For example, the organization linked claims ten million members.

Maybe I missed it, but I browsed around that site and saw nothing said about Armageddon.

I do not know if 18 and a half years from account creation to first post is a record, but it sure sounds like a contender!
Welcome!

As we are currently in the “heathens allowed” section, I can opine that the United States policy for its near unwavering support for Israel, has less to do with certain aspects of Christian eschatology and more to do with keeping the Jews in Israel, (where they wish to be and “belong”).

I have to admire a man who carefully considers his thoughts before speaking.

Unlike me.

Truth be told, my output here would double if I didn’t delete about half of the ones I do!

Thanks for responding, B. Yes, CUFI feature prominently in the documentary, but their website offers no scriptural explanation for their beliefs. That's why I'm here, to pick your eminent brains.

Thanks for responding, Hazel. I've always found the idea of a 'just' war rather befuddling, from a Christian perspective. So, offering military support to people who don't share our faith in Jesus seems even more befuddling. Do they really believe Jesus will save them if we put a rifle in their hands?

There is delusion in all of us.
How do American Christians feel about their government acting in this way? And why are these Christians determined to help a nation that doesn’t even believe Jesus is the Messiah?
All I remember is that through the years Israel has retaliated for missiles being lobed into their country. When the war started I was for them to clean Hamas's clock but now that Israel attacked Hezbollah I think they are going too far and I don't support that even though I understand their reasons.

We help a lot of countries that don't believe in Jesus. Are you for only helping Christian nations, I don't think there is one per se. Even America isn't a Christian nation as many delusional would like to argue, we are a nation of different folks with different beliefs and because of the tribal affiliation, we like to be in attack mode.
I don't know, Armageddon is starting to sound good to me.
Me too! I wish someone would push the button so I can be with the lord and not deal with all this disharmony. I feel sad about the world my kids are growing up in.

We haven’t discovered every potential asteroid that could wipe the Earth clean…so there’s that “hope”, too.

And it's usually hours before it passes us when we do find them.
