  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Councils can err, councils have erred...

Gavin does a fantastic job explaining and dismantling the Orthodox (and Catholic) use of images in worship. 00:00 - Introduction 01:59 - 1) What is Icon Veneration? 07:58 - What is at Stake? 12:34 - 2) Historical Overview 13:14 - Summary of Scholarship 18:50 - PHASE 1: Ante-Nicene Church...

    Not accurate icons?

I had a bit of a conflict with one of my stepparents regarding icons (I thought that issue was already solved). She was raised Roman Catholic and she is Evangelical now), she thinks icons are idolatry, and the icons of Christ and the Theotokos I had in my room were not really them). "How do you...

I found some assorted things that had been missing for a while today

Two small icons of St. Paul and St. John Vianney. I am looking for nails so I can hang them on my icon wall, but we don't have a lot of hardware in this house so I might have to cannibalize some from somewhere else. I also found my charcoal tablets and my frankincense, but I fear that my burner...

Can someone explain statues and icons to me?

Hello, I'm learning about Christianity currently and this is something that I've had some hard time understanding by just reading about it online. What is the purpose of statues/icons? What is the difference between the two? Do they serve different purposes? What is the difference between...

As promised, my icon shelf. It is on the Eastern corner of my room.

This is my icon shelf. As you can see, the one that I made of St. Dymphna, patron saint of the mentally ill, is on there next to the transfiguration and Saint Monica. The Christ Pantokrator I got from my cousin who is a Ukr. Greek Catholic priest. The one of the BVM and the infant Jesus I got...

Video about Saint John of Damascus, Holy Icons and Islam (675-749 A.D.)

I don't usually post about Islam, but this video connects to the history of Christianity and Christian Doctrines that directly differ from Islam. Saint John of Damascus was one of the first Christians to write a defense of Christian Doctrine to the Muslims (675-749 A.D.) John of Damascus -...

    Has Muslim Theology influenced Iconoclasm?

I feel there weren't any major issues regarding the use of Icons in the History of Christianity until Muslims appeared. I mean, we know how strict and severe Muslims are regarding images of any holy person and the issue happened in Eastern Europe (close to Muslim nations)

    A question about icons symbology

Hello. I found some icons of Saint Mary Mother of God (theotokos) with a Jesus child in her arms, and Jesus holds a papyrus. So, what calls my attention is the papyrus in the hand of Jesus child. Because Jesus adult holding a book is a common representation of Jesus Christ as Pantocrator. This...

Do you pray with icons? What are your thoughts?

While I was raised Lutheran, I was also confirmed/chrismated in the Greek Orthodox Church. I still continue to pray with icons. At our Episcopal church, we do have some icons and we occasionally place more during special services. What are your thoughts, as Anglicans, about the use of icons in...

    Explanation of Iconography

I'd prefer that people who are iconodules (forgive the spelling, but those who support iconography) and not iconoclasts answer the following questions, if they can. I am an Eastern Orthodox Christian but I have been having internal conflicts about iconography very recently. I know that the icon...

Apologetics (Preparing to defend Orthodox faith from Protestant attacks)
