  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does the catholic church teach that the pope is infallible?

Hi there! I'm just wondering what the catholic church teaches about "bad" popes. I keep seeing more and more catholics being disappointed with pope Francis (for example on Pints with Aquinas). I am not a catholic myself, but I do believe that pope Francis holds and teaches a lot of...

    God's Plan for Humanity

Well, the purpose of this thread is to establish that the world is how it is, because God planned for it to be this way. In my opinion, there is no other possibility. As I wrote in the original thread, if God knew that we would be corrupted, then why create us at all? He couldn't possibly, out...

    God's Plan for Humanity

Still, what I'm saying is that even though we have free will, that doesn't change the fact that this was all planned by God.

    God's Plan for Humanity

I have absolutely no difficulty accepting that we have free will even though God has planned and therefore knows everything we do in advance. I fail to see why there is a conflict in the first place. I see it this way: God doesn't order us to do anything, he always gives us a choice. The fact...

    Universal Reconciliation

It's so funny how the people supporting UR in this thread, such as John, are always so respectful and well mannered, using reason to support their claims, whereas those who oppose this thinking and believe in Hell and Heaven (in my opinion, an invention made by men to divide the people on earth)...

    God's Plan for Humanity

Hello guys! A few months ago I posted this thread called God's Plan for Humanity. Here's the original post: I still struggle with this and though I know I'll never get a definite answer until I die, I would still like to know what you make of it.

    The dangers of the bible

Thank you for keeping it short and simple :). Although I would say that the bible represents the age in which it was written, but it contains infinite timeless lessons. As a matter of fact, I'd say that everything written in the bible can be applied to our days, you only have to find the...

    The dangers of the bible

Yes, I realize this. I wasn't suggesting that the bible is flawed or wrong. What I meant is this: whatever you're looking for in the bible, you can find it there. That's how extremist groups like the IRA or the KKK are created. I realize that the people that form those groups are wicked, but...

    The dangers of the bible

Please guys, I didn't open this thread to start a fight. I did it so we could have a productive discussion about this topic. As 2timothy2:15 pointed out, this forum is called controversial christian theology for a reason. If you don't like the thread, then maybe you shouldn't be here...

The Word of God vs The Holy Scripture

Hi guys. This post might get a little lengthy, because I am going to address some good points made by all of you. I ask that you bear with me so we can keep discussing this topic which I believe is an important one. Please read the whole post, even the parts that aren't directly discussing what...

    Jesus or Yeshua?

You're absolutely right. Also, God could have made a new sun which he planted in our solar system for one day, and so it would appear to Joshua that the sun was standing still. Also, he could have influenced the vision of people, so that they got the illusion that the sun and the moon were...

The Word of God vs The Holy Scripture

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The phrase “word of God” appears often in the Bible and can have a different meaning depending on context. John 5:39 teaches us not to rely solely on the scriptures, for they only testify about Jesus, which is what...

    What Good Is Literal Understanding?

I understand what you mean, you're not saying that it didn't happen, you're saying that to a reader of the bible nowadays it doesn't matter if it actually happened or not, because it contains a powerful spiritual message either way. My human reason tells me that you're right. However, I still...

    What Good Is Literal Understanding?

Hey John, I adressed this in a previous post. I don't know if you saw it or not, but you didn't comment, which makes me think you didn't. I'll just quote it here.

    What Good Is Literal Understanding?

@Der Alter You're not addressing the crucial points in my argument. You say that because (some) Jews believed that hell existed, and Jesus didn't directly point out that this belief was wrong, there must be a hell. I'm saying that (some) Jews also believed in all those crazy things I quoted...

    What Good Is Literal Understanding?

It's also written in the jewish encyclopedia that: It [Gehenna] had three gates, one in the wilderness, one in the sea, and one in Jerusalem ('Er. 19a). The gate lies between two palm-trees in the valley of Hinnom, from which smoke is continually rising (ib.). The mouth is narrow, impeding the...

    What Good Is Literal Understanding?

I never quoted anybody. Everything I posted here is based on my own reasoning and fruit of my own relationship with God and interpretation of his word. Also, nowhere, not even in your lexicons or even the jewish encyclopedia does it say that the words Gehenna or Sheol/Hades directly translate to...

    What Good Is Literal Understanding?

That's exactly the point I'm trying to make. You cannot base you belief on these 'theories' put forth by other people.

    The dangers of the bible

You described exactly what I feel. In fact, it resemble my own thoughts so much, I could have said it myself. Here's a question: how do you feel one should proceed about talking about God to a really narrow-minded atheist? Sometimes, I get the feeling that it might not be the right time, this...
