Reading the Old Testament in 2012: Help?

One of my resolutions for 2012 is to read the Old Testament in its entirety. [I don't know it as well as I should]. Unless someone can suggest a better method to study it, I just plan on reading it from start to finish. If there is a better plan, I'd like to hear some suggestions (for...

    Discipleship Studies To Recommend?

Our small group has recently done studies in James and Acts (both using MacArthur Study Guides). We love these studies, and definitely want to do more. But as the leader of the group, I'm wondering if we shouldn't take a break and do a study designed to reach out to the lost and/or the...

    John MacArthur Studies: Your Favorite(s)?

Our small group did the MacArthur study on James this past summer, and we loved it. Would highly recommend it to all. We are currently doing Acts, and love it as well. Which MacArthur studies has your group done, and what did you think of them? What about the studies from the Old Testament...

    Predestination according to Calvinism

As we read the New Testament....there is no doubt that there is talk of election. In Matthew 13:1-23 (the parable of the sowers), Christ even says that some are not meant to understand...and the implication is that they will not enter the Kingdom. That being said. Yes, there have to be some...

    Is baptism necessary for salvation?

Very interesting question. Odd that I came upon this question just after posting a new thread. My thread is asking for thoughts on Acts 8:14-17. Read that....then feel free to comment on my post concerning this passage. ........ To answer YOUR question. I was raised to believe that...

Acts 8:14-17 [v.16 In Particular]. HELP!!!

Phillip has just gone to Samaria and many believe after they hear the good news. Verses 14-17 follows: 14) "Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to join them, 15) who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they...

    Covenant Membership/New Believers/Seekers???

Members agree that a listed set of biblical principals need to be abided by... so that members can work together more harmoniously for the sake of church unity and promoting the Kingdom. [Agreeing, for instance, to refuse to gossip, encouraging members to invite others to church, to serve in...

    Covenant Membership/New Believers/Seekers???

I am an elder in a church that was planted in the fall of 2010. Our church is elder led, and we have a membership covenant. I am very much in support of both of these concepts, but this is not the issue. That being said, I feel that we need another type of roll in place that will help us stay...

    John R.W. Stott.... Thoughts? Acts?

Getting ready to do a study in Acts. I have John McArthur's Commentary, Shepherd's Notes, & Serendipity as guides.....but was wondering about the commentary of John R.W. Stott. I am not familiar with him, but his book came up as an alternative that I might be interested in when I did an online...

another question for proponents of free will

We have like minds. I was raised Southern Baptist, and heard that explanation of "predestination" all my life. Your thoughts questioning God's 'foreknowledge' mirror mine exactly. And the fact that you have voiced my thoughts "to the 'T'" offers me reassurance that "I am not crazy." It's kind...

Course/Book Request: To Reach The Lost

Suppose our small group put an article in our local small town paper that read: ...Another one of the courses being offered is "What Is Christianity?" This course is specifically designed for those who want to learn more about the basics of the Christian faith. The course will meet in the...

Southern Baptist Leaning Toward Becoming Non-Denominational

Just curious if any of you non-denominational types are former Southern Baptists (or some other denominational type). I'd like to know why you 'made the switch' if you don't mind sharing. I'm currently Southern Baptist, and our congregation (which is a recent plant) has offered me the most...

Thank you Bella for sharing your heart.....I do believe that we share the same theology.

    My Pastor Is A Calvinist....But

It's study the Bible, live the Bible. How does one explain Romans 9? Yet we are told to spread the gospel in Matthew 28: 19-20 I see no contradiction.....God may very well elect. Yet we are still instructed to evangelize. How else do the elect hear the gospel? And who are we to determine...

    My Pastor Is A Calvinist....But

My pastor says that he is a Calvinist....But he feels that it is very important that we follow the great commission "Matthew 28:19-20". Why in the world, then, would some members of the congregation come down on him just because he says that he is a Calvinist. My pastor preaches from the...

    Wild Question Re: Calvinism/Arminianism

I am going thru a huge Calvinism/Arminianism debate in my church. Let me pose this question: "What happens to the souls of Native Americans who died prior to the westernization of America?" "Why did God not permit them to know about Jesus?" If you lean toward Calvinism or Arminianism offer...

Is there a "Bible in a Chronological Nutshell" Book/Study Out There

I am a small group leader, and I am looking for a study/course that would run about 6-13 weeks that is designed to take the new (or even long-term) Christian through a chronological survey of the Bible. Looking for a course that would include things such as creation, man's relation to sin...

    Am I Calvinist or Armenian?

I've know what you're saying. It's the 'which-came-first-the-chicken-or-the-egg' game. I never quite could swallow the predestination argument that "He knows what you're going to do but you still have a choice." It certainly sounds as though God is in total control if you ask me.

    Am I Calvinist or Armenian?

Glad to know that 'neither' is an option. For God obviously creates some in advance for very special purposes here on earth. The Spirit WILL seek these people out so that they know of their calling. I BELIEVE THIS WITHOUT QUESTION AND WILL NEVER CHANGE MY STAND ON THIS. As for the rest of...
