Why did Bush mention Dred Scott?

That was pretty weird, huh? And why wouldn't Kerry or Edwards hammer Bush on malpractice insurance (since it's gone up due to the crummy stock market)? Theories?

(posted elsewhere, but intended for here - I guess i confused 'internets')

Wow, I miss 36 pages of banter. Bummer.

That was painful to watch, not once did I feel that either candidate did anything but spout rhetoric. Neither one stayed on topic, and both took too many moments of actual meaningful speech away to attack each other. There's got to be a better way to do this...

edited to change tense
I didn't find the entire thing painful.

If you are a Kerry fanboy then you'll say he won. The libs would be saying he won if he spent an hour belching and flatulating into the mic.
Mighty charitable, thanks.
Neither clearly won, but I think Bush did extremely well. All Kerry did was keep repeating his ridiculous and empty promises.
And we can tell they were riduculous and empty because... his mouth was moving?

Those people are stupid, earpieces and battery packs are about 10 years behind the times.
If it was an earpiece that would explain the change in demeanor half way through...someone told him to chill.

Actually, I found the debate to be a pleasant experience. It passed by really quickly and smoothly. Bush tried some rhetoric tactics and some humor, and even that worked. And I think the opponents have the intention to attack each other, because simply debating about an issue confuses most Americans who give half-awake ears.

btw Zoot, Bush was wearing body armor, lol.

Hey, it's hard work keeping up with all the internets.
That was humorous. One time when Kerry plugged his website, I said to my roommate, "How many can he reach on just one internet? Bush knows about all of them!"

Funny that Kerry has plugged his website in both debates now. Wonder how that's working for him?

Bush was asked about what mistakes he has made and what he's done to fix them before- several months ago in a press conference. His response then was he wasn't given the question ahead of time so he didn't answer it. He has had MONTHS to come up with some sort of answer. A good leader constantly evaluates their performance, sees where they have messed up, and works to fixing their mistakes. I simply cannot support a president that doesn't do that. At least Kerry acknowledges that he has made mistakes, he clarifies them as to why he did, and how he fixed them.

And I liked Kerry's response to the abortion question. He does not want to legislate his faith and enforce it on others who don't share it. It doesn't mean he isn't being faithful or a good Christian. It means he understands the 1st Amendment and respects that not everyone shares the same values he does. Kinda like who Bush said he'd appoint to the Supreme Court... why is it ok for Bush to say that about an appointment, but not ok for Kerry to do himself?
