Those guys are still around? I thought they went bankrupt.
Actually they never went bankrupt - but came close to it when a few years ago they had conferences for FREE... Unfortunately they still had to pay thousands of dollars for rent and other payments..

Thus the money to pay for conferences - which are awesome.. They were in Baltimore and fantastic...

Its more then just worshipping GOD.. anyone can worship where they wish with whomever.. PK conferences are seminars to get men passionate for what God is calling them to... PK has touched thousands of lives for the BETTER.........

Susan Faludi (feminist author) had a chapter on the Promise Keepers in her book called Stiffed. It was really very interesting. A group of men allowed her to attend their in home PK meetings. It was fascinating. One of the biggest criticisms of the PK was that it taught men "to be the head of the household". But she found that, at least for this group of men, that the women still ran the show, but the men were supposed to be the "spiritual" head of the house - and they frequently discussed what that meant. Susan potrayed PK (or at least its participants) in a very sympathetic light.

Y'know, I was gonna mention the same thing. It was very interesting, indeed.

While I agree with her analysis, ya gotta admit that it was reductionist - it explained the PK movement not on the merits, but in terms of psychological forces (abandonment by fathers, etc.). As such, it could easily be read as condescending. I happen to think that's the correct way to approach the PKs, but one should be forthright about it.

I think that's true. But I think she did that to fit the overall thesis of the book. I was actually quite suprised by the book. I had expected a rant, but instead got an interesting thesis.

Who really gives a rip what she says? While I know very little about PK, I dang sure am not put any value on someone like Susan opinions. Which is maybe why I need to go myself and make an proper evaluation.

Well, I give a rip. She's a very intelligent person. Because of her portrayal of the PK, I actually think more highly of the organization.

Interesting. Do you think highly enough of them to go to one of their conferences?
Being an atheist, I might not exactly fit in :)

But before I read her book, I thought the group was mysogynistic. I don't think that anymore, nor do I think that men who go to these meetings are out to "dominate their wives". There really just a bunch of men who are looking for fellowship. Faludi's premise is that men want to feel like they are an important part of a community - and that modern society has been detrimental to that sense of belonging. PK fills that need - which is good.

Yes, I can see you are a atheist. I am not blind. However, there could be some useful information shared pertainant to any man. Just a thought. Of course that would be hypocritical of me to expect an atheist to go to PK when I won't listen to what Susan has to say.

I don't think you are hypocritical. The problem (at least for me) is that there is only so much time. I would potentially go to a PK meeting, but there are so many other priorities in my life, that I doubt I would make the time to go.

Plus, I would be afraid that people would find out I was an atheist and they would all jump on me in one big "prayer dog pile" as men are wont to do.....:)

That's funny. I have only missed a couple of years since PK began. I would highly recommend that men attend a PK event, even at the risk of getting caught up in a "prayer dog pile". I always buy some of the video from selected speakers. I am always amazed at the quality of the speakers and the content of messages at PK events. Men should go to at least one of these.
