Dear friends,
I am wondering what your thoughts are on a Christian listening to Celtic & Halloween (scary-sounds) music. Do you support it? For the Halloween music, does it damage one's spirituality? Is the music "just plain fun" or does it conjure up Satan? If you all can help me here, I'd appreciate it.

In Christ Jesus,
JesseB.

Humm, thats a good questions, From my point of view it depends on how strong you are spritually.

I listen to rock music alot, often called " the tool of the devil" :), <---why should the devil have that!, god created it right! (any way)

The way I look at it is, there are certain artists who I listen to because I know that they are not out to offend me and are not insulting Jesus in any way, for example, alot of people have herd of Manson right, well hes dead against god and jesus, so if hes against my god then I dont listen to him!

But on the flip side, some rock music can make you angry or put you in a different mind set!
I have experienced this, generally how much rock music I listen to refelcts where I am with god at the present time. The more rock i listen to the harder it is for god to reach me (this is my opinion)

I think its ok to listen to what music you want as long as its in moderation and its not offensive to Jesus in anyway. A saying that my g/f uses on me is....would you be comfortable with Jesus listening to that with you......

Make's you think dont it!

What on earth has Celtic Music got to do with Halloween?

*Can't quiet picture The Cheiftans holding a genial dark mass*
*Tries to imagine Mary Black on a broom stick*
*Speculates if the Dubbliners could have made a pact withold nick before the deal with the Pogues*
*Thinks of Maddy Prior (Steel Eye Span) but just can't go there...*

Can't get the connection myself.

Does that music have lyrics, or is it just scary sounding music like the music for Jason or Freddie? I think it all depends on the lyrics.

Certain musical patterns can conjure up emotions, and emotions can be quite powerful/disturbing.

But yeah, the lyrics are definatly a major factor!

Megalon: Did you say that your g/f doesnt mind celebrating Halloween? Do you mind me asking why that is, I have grown up always believing it is wrong!

I don't think there would be a problem listening to any kind of music as long as it doesn't interfere with your walk with God.

I celebrate halloween, and I'm a Christian. I go over to my grandma's and watch all my little cousins get ready to go trick or treating. No one in my family has every had a problem with it, The meaning of halloween in america has changed quite a bit from the pagan traditions, its all about the candy. :)

hmmm... I love the sounds of celtic music and have heard a few Christian artists that sing to that kind of music... who...??? Can't remember but I can look if you want.

We don't celebrate Halloween, when the kids were younger we did Harvest parties at church and now that they are a bit older it's movies and sugar highs!

We don't because of the spiritual implications and the witchcraft that surrounds that holiday (I have a few acquaintances that are witches, and some dear friends that used to be). It is most definitely a personal choice - halloween or the music you listen to.

I used to listen to Rock (AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, etc etc) then I moved back to country (my roots LOL), but I've moved to Christian rock, alternative, and country. It's where *I* am in my walk and isn't indicative of anyone elses decisions.

If you are questioning certain groups or certain types of music, pray about it. It may be the nudging of the Holy Spirit.

I think it was more of a reference to paganism.. but I could be wrong. I've read that Halloween can be a dangerous holiday spiritually for Christians.

My girlfriend thinks that Halloween is just fine to celebrate, however.. and she's a Christian too.

Should a Christian Be Listening To Celtic & Halloween music?

It is such a sweeping statement it is meaningless. Celtic Music is as old as the Celts (i.e. BC). Some bands are neo-pagans, some trad folk music who just like old tunes. Some country dances draw reference on fertility rites etc, some on every day chores such as harvest. It is no worse and often better than contemporary pop. It all depends what intent the artists or performers have.

You could play safe and only listen to Christian Music but then you just end up in a Ghetto.

I would think there is a great deal of more harm in listening to some of the rap, and heavy metal than anything celtic. As far as Halloween Music I do not know what you have in mind.

I'm not sure exactly what Celtic music is, and I'm not sure what she means by Halloween music. But I do agree about heavy metal music and certain types of rap like gangster rap and other negative types of rap.

I don't believe in celebrating Halloween though, since for some Halloween is like a religious holiday, it's kinda like celebrating Muslim or bhuddist holidays or some other religion's holiday. Even though it's whitewashed and made to appear innocent and cute, it's still paganistic.

I don't see a problem though with parents who want to celebrate a different occasion on the same night by having a non halloween party so the kids don't feel left out. It's getting too dangerous to trick or treat anymore anyway! LOL! :D

I think I have a tape by a Christian celtic band, not sure on the name, but I think it was "Eden's Bridge?" Maybe it was a different name, not sure.

Either way, this is all up to your personal likes and convictions.

Phoebe: Greensleeves is Olde English and tradition has it that it was written by King Henry 8th (No in other words). You will find there are many traditional folk melodies and celtic tunes used in Hymns. E.g. Royal Oak (All things Bright and Beautiful.) Ye Banks and Braes, The melody to "Star of County Down" To name but a few. Bretton and Slovac melodies are also used.
I have a book of Traditional British Songs. The Welsh section is almost exclusively religious.

Susan: Are you refering to a band called Eden Burning who were around in the early 90's ?

Save the party for All Saints Day which is the orginal festival to mark all the Saints that could not have their own day in the Church calendar. This is on 1st November and has now been overshadowed by the darker celebrations.
