It is sin for a Christian to have sex before the wedding night??

  • No, God says we can have sex before the wedding.

  • Yes, God says sex before marriage is sin.

  • I never really thought about it.

I agree. God intended sex to be an expression of love and intimacy between a man and woman who are united in one flesh though the covenant of marriage.

We must remember, however, that this is not an unforgivable sin. The Bible teaches that it is wrong and Christians should avoid it but Christ redeems this sin as well as all the others.

This is not a "blank check" to go out and have fun. That's not what I mean here. This is intended as an encouragement to those who may have fallen on this issue in the past.

Well, my answer is still the same from a week ago or so when I posted my response to this. It's wrong to have sex before marriage. Joseph and Mary were basically what we would deem married, because their betrothal was legally binding, and they would basically have to go through a "divorce" to end it. Yet, they still couldn't have sexual relations until they were officially married, with the ceremony and all. So yeah...I think that pretty much says to me that we have to be legally married, and the whole "we're married in God's eyes" thing just doesn't cut it. That's my opinions.

I can't vote cuz the option I would choose is not there. :p I think sex before marriage in some cases is wrong. Probably most cases.

But if you're really in love and you both know you're going to spend the rest of your lives together, and you are not unfaithful... I think that's fine. :)

(Please don't yell at me for this... it's just my opinion!)

Sex before marriage is wrong.

But who is to decide what constitutes marriage? I don't think Marriage is as "Earthly" as we think it is! In fact I am sure there are many more factors involved.

I am not saying that a "state sanctioned marriage" is worthless, just that to some that may come later in life and others much sooner.

Lots of prayer should be involved before making a decision either way. You MUST know with your whole heart that God is behind you in your decision

I see where you're going here. Here are some things to think about regarding this view:

1) If a marriage can be something different from what most of us think of as a marriage then what should it be? What constitutes a marriage if it's not what you refer to as "state sanctioned?" There's a slippery slope here.

2) Who, ultimately, established the laws for state sanctioned marriages? God did. Yes, the culture was different in Jesus' time in regards to how marriage was done. However, a couple was not considered married unless they observed the customs of the culture. Hence the Joseph and Mary analogy.

3) Nowhere in Scripture does it indicate that a couple can be considered married in the sight of God without following the laws of the day. Yes, the customs in today's culture are different and more flexible but some things are still followed. (ie: A marriage license, an official, and wittnesses.)

If God had wanted to extend the definition of marriage to committed relationships He would have indicated this in His Word. We must be careful never to allow our feelings to override Scripture.

So would the same hold for other things we are commanded by God about?

It is wrong to commit murder but maybe if we really hate the person, it would be ok?

If you really loved the person and you really loved God, then you would follow His ways and not the worlds.

We are not called to follow God when it is just easy but also when it is hard. Obeying God is honoring Him, but obeying Him when it is so easy not to, that is love. Make sure that you get love from the maker of of it, not the perverter of it. Get and seek out love in the purest form which only comes from God.

BTW have you ever found conditions to any of the commandments of God? Have you ever read once in the Bible that it is wrong to do something but in this situation it would be OK? Just something to think about.

The Bible speaks very openly about this topic, and it doesn't leave a lot of room for interpretation. I Corinthians 6:18 says to flee fornication (sex outside of marriage). It goes on to say that every other sin a person commits is outside of the body, but when you have sex before you are married, you are sinning against your own body. Ephesians 5:1-5 also speaks against premarital sex, and says that people who have sex before they are married have no inheritance in the kingdom of God. That makes me very thankful for forgiveness! I Thessalonians 4:3 says that it is the will of God to abstain from sex before marriage.
These are just a few verses I found, and I know that there are many more which discuss this topic.
