Hello DrBob!

My brother owns land right alongside the western boundry of Stockbridge. The land has been in the family for over 150 years. The land is just used for forest crop and hunting purposes and has no permanent building on it. I don't hunt so I signed over my 20 acres to my brother.
That is longer than the tribe has been there! Our tribe did not get federally recognized until the 1930's and then the menominee's had to give us some of their land before the gov't finally came through.

I have a sister in Wausau who deals cards at northstar casino on the rez...

Hey there, I live about an hour sw of Milwaukee and I just love spending time in Milwaukee. My favorite Milwaukee christian band is Spirit Creek and they have two concerts coming up at the Rave May 1 and May 8. On the 1st they are opening for Better than Ezra and on the 8th they are opening for POD. Check out their website at spiritcreek.com If you've never heard them you should check them out........they are so real, down to earth and out of this world performers.

Thanks Neph! My husband & I were in Wausau this past February. I went cross-country skiing for the first time.....and it wasn't pretty! My husband grew up in northern Sweden, so he's been on skiis since he was 3 years old! I wiped out & little kids were skiing past me!! :o

(Good thing I didn't try downhill at Granite Peak as my first skiing experience! However, once I got the hang of it, it was fun. The scenery at Nine Mile Forest was breathtaking!

We'll definitely be back!

Jeff Foxworthy on Wisconsin:

If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because International Falls is the coldest spot in the nation, you might live in Wisconsin.

If you have ever refused to buy something because it's "too spendy",you might live in Wisconsin.

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in Wisconsin.

If you instinctively walk like a penguin for five months out of the year, you might live in Wisconsin.

If someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don't work there, you might live in Wisconsin.

If your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead, you might live in Wisconsin.

If you may not have actually eaten it, but you have heard of Lutefisk, you might live in Wisconsin.

If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you might live in Wisconsin.

If you have either a pet or a child named "Brett", you might live in Wisconsin.

If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in Wisconsin.

If you have had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Wisconsin.

If you know how to say Oconomowoc, Waukesha, Menomonie & Manitowoc, you might live in Wisconsin.

If you think that ketchup is a little too spicy, you might live in Wisconsin.

If every time you see moonlight on a lake, you think of a dancing bear, and you sing gently, "From the land of sky-blue waters,....you might live in Wisconsin.

14. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled

with snow.

15. You refer to the Packers as "we."

19. You consider Minneapolis exotic.

20. You know how to polka.

your blue spruce.

That last one is actually The (Bears/Vikings) win the Super Bowl. How dare you.
Thanks Annie that was a good, funny list!

QuePasa I totally agree! If that last item was true Hell froze three times over!
Since that is impossible they must be talking about the Vikings. The Bears won in 1986 so they can't count either.

I asked my mother about this and what she says is that the family moved from Canada into Wisconsin in the 1850s and didn't own the land until around 1875 so I guess my info that I first gave you is a little off. As for the tribe not owning the land until the 1930s, hey, you guys were here before us, who are we to say we owned it before your forefathers ;) .

Northstar Casino is a popular place around here but sorry, I don't gamble.

You must have been involved in the Badger State Games? They go on in the first week of Febuary.

Granite Peak is a great down hill ski area for this area, formally known as Rib Mountain. They have added so many ski runs that they have totally changed the way the hill looks now. Living in the city of Wausau I'm used to seeing a beautiful hill of green trees but now most of it is a striped with areas of grass and trees. Living here most of my life I guess it's just something I have to get used to.

Glad you enjoyed your trip here last winter and yes, please come again!

Your info could still be right on! You guys just owned the land next to what would one day become our reservation! Our tribal homeland was New York state and Mass. in the Houstatonic river valley.

We probably have ancestors in common with all the marriages that happened around there. Who knows for sure?!

Well I do know my uncle Richard used to brag about haveing indian blood in the family but from the story he always told it was Canadian indian but no one has ever been able to confirm this? My last name is Thomas and is of Norwiegian decent so you would think we would all be blood, blued eyed, and fair skinned but some of us, including myself are anything but. Maybe if you asked around there some of the old folks might remember the name. I know even though there isn't any Thomas's that live around Bowler anymore some of the older folks there still remember the name. I know that my grandparents moved out of the homestead and went to live in Shawano I do believe right around the time you say the reservation came to be in the 1930s.
