Baptists getting on my nerves

I would encourage you to go a few times and check it out. If not now, when? :) I recently stopped going to a smaller Presbyterian church 10 min. away, to go to a large Baptist church about 30 minutes away. It does take some time to adjust, but I also found that there are more options on how I can participate in the Church (beyond going to the service). For example, I am single and they have a large singles group. The other church had a college group, and then a "young adult" group that was basically anyone under 40! Also, of course pray about it and ask God to show you the best thing to do. From my humanist "reason" it seems like it would be a pain to drive further on Sunday, but sometimes we are called to do things that require sacrifice in order to reap the rewards later!!

What is it about the baptist church that they insist on telling everyone to "turn or burn" every single Sunday? I've been church shopping in my hometown up here lately, and I've had the misfortune of running into some "Community Churches" that all they do is tell everyone they are going to hell if they don't know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Don't misinterpret the frustration here, I'm all for winning souls for Christ, but folks, there are 66 books in the bible, can we at least explore a few of them, outside of John 3:16 and Romans 3:23?
I don't know about anyone else, but I get real tired of hearing the salvation message week in and week out. And 99% of the people in church have heard it a million times already as well. It would seem to me that the church would be better served preaching something people might not have heard before, rather then regurgitating the same message week in and week out. It's pretty weak theology if you ask me to repeat "turn or burn" every week. That to me takes no effort on the part of the pastor.

Anyone else have a similar experience? Anyone enjoy hearing it every week? Any of you baptists care to defend your faith? Maybe the Presbyterian in me is showing itself, but for my money, I want to get some "meat" with my worship experience, and the salvation message is like a broken record to me. I gave my life to Christ years ago, can me move on to more stimulating topics...please?

The primary message of the Bible is about Salvation. It could be that they are aware that most of what passes for the evangelical church today is the feel good religion ..health and wealth , sin is not sin it is dysfunction and most of all you need to have a good measure of self esteem..

Then there are the churches that want to only talk about the agenda of the world..hunger, racism, ecology etc..

The message of the early church was salvation centered.
I recently left a Reform Baptist church that has an awesome preacher..he teaches scripture line by line.
I hated to leave but they did not have a childrens Sunday School and my grandkids go with me

I am now attending a Bible Presbyterian..The Pastor there does topical sermons..the last month has been on the christian walk and spiritul warfare..Very good , but to be honest I have not learned one thing that was new to this old Christian. The baptist preacher gave me many new notes in my bible.

Oh, he usually preaches on a different passage morning/evening's :)

We just finished both Peters, and half of Acts. I know He's been through Romans and Hebrews... and maybe Revalation, but I dont' remember. He's been the pastor since 1989, when it started...

He's retiring - his last Sunday here, preaching, will be Easter... this Sunday

my pastor preaches exactly like that - line by line. or, book by book... but a book (like, Hebrews) takes 8 years ;)

That is how the early reform (protestant ) churches taught
That is meat not milk...good to grow on!

The Preacher where I left took 6 months to do Romans 1-3

but you better believe we all KNEW it:>)

Then you must REALLY get tired of reading Jesus' sermons. He preached more on Hell than anyone else.

That and whenever I read the Gospels Jesus is giving the same old messages.

That sounds like the church I've been attending.  :D   I love it.  My wife is black and was raised in a black baptist church, she makes fun of the music of the church we are not attending but likes the preaching.

PS  Here's what it says on one of there flyers:  "We are an old-fashioned fundamental, Bible-preaching church with an emphasis on winning folks to Christ and training them to serve Him."

If you do not like the sermons you are hearing, why not change Churches? Have you tried the Methodists or the Unitarians? Maybe the Episcopalians or the Catholics? Keep shopping until you find a Church that preaches what you want to hear!

I hope you were kidding, Gerry. We should want to hear the Word of God... not just what we want to hear. I don't always want to hear what I hear... I don't like being convicted exaaactly ;) But it is what I SHOULD hear. That's important.

Hehe, my church is a indendent-Bible-pre-milennial-dispensationalist-nasIsTheBestTranslation-fundamental-expositoy-preaching church :p

Did I mention, right-wing-wacko ;)

Well Paulewog I think what I have heard of Bob Achilles so far is quite good.  I've listened to 2 sermons so far on that series of False Teachers.  One problem though Paulewog, the website seems to only start from sermon #2 on that series.... is the first one available?  I've listened to #'s 2&3 ...but would like to hear the first one.

Any ideas? ;)

Because this pastor knows how important it is to win souls. At the same time they should give some meat to their congregation who is already saved so I understand where you are coming from. But there are preachers who have done things like preach 100 times on "Ye must be born again" and I understnad where they are coming from. THe world is full of lost souls we must reach for Christ.

I am in a independent baptist church, we do focus on salvation and its important but we also have "meat" offered the Christians who are already saved. Our pastor covers a variety of topics. Ive learned more about the Word of God in one year in this church more then years in another. I would look for a church that can offer you what you need. This church could be focused on winning souls to Christ for a good reason but for more mature Christians they may be better served elsewhere.

I hope this helps.

LOL..yep let everyman do what is right in his own eyes

_ Jdg 17:5__ And the man Micah had an house of gods, and made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.
__
_ Jdg 17:6__ In those days [there was] no king in Israel, [but] every man did [that which was] right in his own eyes.

I attend a Ind. Batist church - and going there for the past 15 years I haven't heard the same message over - Our Preacher uses the sunday sermons to teach - almost like a Bible study - he'll take a passage and break it down or give real meat to it... during alter call - the only thing he says is the alter is open for prayer or if anyone needs to see him he is available - He never preaches the hell or damnation - but he will include biblical parts concerning salvation..... the messages are geared to the Christians to grow as well as a non christian who needs to learn things..

I agree Paul... too many churches today are preaching what the people want to hear and not Gods word.. the bible mentions that one of the signs of the end times is the churches tickling the ears and treaching what makes people happy - not the word of God........

To be honest ive never understood the 'turn or burn' stereotype Baptists have. Ive never attended a Baptist Church that cranked out 'sinners in the hands of a angry God' everyweek.

I think this has more to do the typical Southern-Bible-thumpin-Bible belt-fundamentalists stereotype that people brand on Baptists.

Thats true i have been in a "feel good" baptist church that was morre interested in telling you how to build your self esteem than in the gospel.
I once attened a large one in my area theee weeks in a row because they said the preacher was great..I heard more tripe from His mouth ..Week one was what a great guy he was because he wanted a racially mixed church, week two was what a great neighborhood they had , and how everyone came out for the storm, week three was about a a church anniversary party.

I did not bother with week four..If they are not telling how to come to Christ or how to walk as He walked I am not interested. I can hear motivational speakers on TV..they are for the world without Christ!
