  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it a sin to get a vasectomy?

I've been thinking as of late about whether or not this is sinful. Im 26M and dont have a desire to be a father. I can't handle children but I do desire marriage and have struggled with whether contraceptives are ok or not. I know that it says in genesis to be fruitful and multiply but idk where i stand on that. Knowing how my brain is i feel like it could lead to anxiety/legalism like other verses have. Im just curious though what others think about something like a vasectomy?

Getting a vasectomy? No. Why you choose to get a vasectomy? That could be.

It sound like you are not married yet. The negative of getting vasectomy now is that you're young and you may find that willingness to be a father changes in time. It will, of course, limit the set of women who you could marry, but if you are open and honest about your feelings then that would pretty much limit the set as well. You may find it hard to find a doctor who will do so for a 26 year old without children because of the risk of regret when you mature more.

Nothing in Scripture say contraception as sin. "Be fruitful and multiply" Gen 1:28 was a commission given to humanity at creation, and repeated to Noah in a repopulating - the world is populated! It wasn't framed as a command binding every individual marriage, or Paul could not have commended singleness and childlessness as good and even preferable for some 1 Corinthians 7:7-8, 32-35. Choosing not to have children is a stewardship decision made before the Lord, not a violation of a law He never gave.

That said, you could wait until your married to make that decision with your wife, or if you know for certain, find a wife who does not want children. This should be an early discussion when dating.

It is sinful to have sex out of wedlock. And good luck finding a young woman who decided the same as you.

Be blessed.

It might change but honestly going off of my own experiences that may not change and honestly im ok with that. I can't handle my niece and nephews when they stay for the weekend with us(I live with my parents) I prefer the peace and quiet i have. I feel like I would be a distant father who would get annoyed quickly by them.

Pray on it. When it’s your own children it is a lot different. I commend you for recognizing this about yourself and not getting carried away with emotions and not care about your future potential children. Not everyone is meant to be a parent, and most really shouldn’t.

My advice for what its worth, I would wait until you are in a serious relationship and considering marriage and then decide. You might find yourself following in love with a women who wants children and may change your mind. If you’re not in a relationship, than no hurry to make this decision. I would wait and make that decision with a future wife. Just be honest with anyone you’re dating how you feel about children early on.

God bless!

I don't see anything in the Bible to say a vascetomy is a sin. We know that Jesus said "woe to those with suck" (young kids) in the context of the Tribulation. (Matthew 24:19) And He and Paul were both clear about the ideal state being single rather than married, if one could handle it. It has been suggested for one of the main reasons for celibacy being the preferred option is that a single person doesn't have to deal with kids, but can instead devote themselves to the Lord and the Word. Definitely pray about such a definite decision, though in and of itself, I wouldn't assume it to be a sin.

I’m a Protestant, so no, I don’t think contraception is sinful. But you only have eight years of living as an adult under your belt and haven’t set up your own home yet. I really don’t think it would be wise to undertake a procedure that can have poor outcomes and may not be reversible when you’ve not settled into yourself yet. It’ll take you a few more years before your personality and values become fixed the way they need to be to make this sort of decision. I never believed people when they told me that, but they were right! I am definitely not who I was at 26! Find the woman you might get pregnant first before sterilising yourself? Or stay single, and you won’t need to sterilise yourself. Just seems a bit dramatic of a move when you’re not at risk of any of the consequences of not doing it, but there are risks to doing it. Also, many people do not enjoy other people’s children, but their own are different! Pretty normal.

I echo others' thoughts... I get that right now you don't want any kids. I 1,000% thought I'd always feel that way, too. In my late 20s, I started wanting them. As it turns out, my husband and I can't have children anyway, but the point is that something that feels solid, fixed, and "Oh, yeah, I'll feel this way forever" may shift. I would suggest, perhaps, not having the procedure yet. At least wait until you find someone you'd like to marry to begin to have that conversation. Because honestly, many women (from what I understand) don't want kids at first, but later on begin to soften to the idea of being moms.

Because sex is, ultimately, also meant to be a procreative act, not just a pleasurable one. To enter into marriage with 0 openness to children being possible on purpose does seem a bit, I don't know, not quite what God would prefer?

Until the sexual revolution, Christians of all denominations were against this kind of thing. It was pushed by the non-Christians who didn't like the way God had patterned the world, & now it's accepted freely b/c 'do whatever you want.' I believe it is an act of rebellion against God. The Bible's pattern is either stay single or get married & be open to children. Don't do it OP.

PS 127:4-5 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

To me the default position is to want children, that children are a blessing. Quite a few in the bible were tormented by not having children, I can't think of any tormented for having kids, though I am sure that is possible. I admit that modern society flips that upside down sometimes. Iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another. Without children some people will lose part of their ability to grow. This growth is about sacrifice, about suffering at times, at giving in love. Why close that off? I would see a temporary form of birth control a far better solution in marriage than somewhat permanent one. (There are reversals, and the fail rate is .5 to 1%)

If children are a heritage from the Lord, getting a vasectomy can be a way of saying, "I have my own plans and want to avoid what God may have for me". Oral contraceptives are similar but many of them act as abortions by failing to allow an embryo to implant.

The whole problem with mankind is selfishness. Being a parent is one way God uses to make us care for someone besides ourselves.

What exactly am I supposed to do then? Paul tells us to marry if we burn with passion am I supposed to just white knuckle it my whole life? I just dont have a desire to raise kids. Is there something wrong with that?

I have heard this even from preachers before, but I see it as “weak God” theology. Despite what biology or medical expertise may say, if God decides you having a child is what He wants, He will make it happen. This type of argument implies God is not omnipotent.

Look at what happens in the Bible. Sarah, Rebekah, Rachael, Hannah, Elizabeth and maybe more had children when they were supposedly infertile. Yes, they all wanted to get pregnant, but Mary didn’t and He still chose otherwise.

Becoming a parent is not a universal requirement fromGod either. Paul and other stayed unmarried and obviously childless and accomplished what God desired.

To the OP, while there are good reasons to consider for delaying a vasectomy, this is not one of those.
