  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Pillar, for those who don't know, is one of the best sources for solid Catholic journalism with limited bias and consistently good reporting. Here they discuss the possibility that Pope Leo might be visiting Ukraine soon, and the accompanying rumors that he may be elevating the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, to the status of a Patriarch. This follows ++Shevchuk's announcement that the UGCC, the second-largest branch of Catholicism after the Latin, has put together its own code of canon law, to be used alongside the Code for the Eastern Churches. He called this something that "mature churches" do, which may hint at a desire for elevation.

As the analysis notes, since Vatican II the head of the UGCC has been designated a "major archbishop," a status that's quite close to patriarch but admittedly something of a legal fiction, probably aimed at holding out hope for ecumenical developments with the Russian Orthodox Church. Given ++Kirill's heartless persecution of the Ukrainian Catholics and Orthodox, is it possible that Leo is seeing the time for such olive branches has passed? Should Kyiv once again be recognized as the mother church of Rus'?

And speaking of which, is it Kyiv or Kiev? I always read Kiev growing up, but noticed the change on account of the war and Ukraine asserting the right to their preferred latinization of the name. But then the Pillar goes and spells it Kiev the whole way! What gives?
