  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

God's free gift of Eternal Life
Oh come on; it’s not free. If he does not do what God wants he goes to Hell. It’s a conditional offer at best.

No, no and no again. You can't decide to believe in something. You can decide to investigate it. And decide to discuss it. And decide to ask people that you trust to tell you about it. And then, if you think that the evidence is sufficiently compelling then you will automatically believe.

You can't take the evidence, have an internal debate and conclude that it is absolutely compelling and decide not to believe it. And you can't reject the evidence yet decide that you will believe it.
Actually, you can. But it takes some depth in Philosophy to come to a newer, more tenuous realization on that front.

However, in the instance of the specific individual being discussed in this thread, I do realize that the only appropriate response for him is the one I gave to the OP.
And something tells me that in the first instance, if the guy has been around for 8 decades then he'll have heard all the arguments for and against and he will have made his conclusion. And in the second instance, just saying that he'll believe to get the grand prize of Eternal Life! ain't going to convince the guy offering said prize that it's genuine (hint: because He's omniscient).

Actually, you can.
No, you really can't. Otherwise you'd be able to give me an example of something that you are convinced is true but decided to believe it was false. Or an example of anyone at all who has done it.

What puzzles me is that you must have known I'd say that knowing that you can't give any examples.

Good grief, man. He's 85. I'd suggest that he's been around long enough to have come to terms with his beliefs and to expect some appreciation of his final wishes and not have someone implore him to do anything at all. If he's been a good man and there is a mercifull God then he'll be accepted into whatever heaven there might be.

If you want to do something for him then pray for him. Else what? Tell him he's going to burn in hell unless he denies his own beliefs and accepts yours?

What an attitude..
It is stated above by the OP that the atheist was raised a Christian and later left the church.

No man comes to me Jesus says unless the Father draws him.
Faith comes from hearing the message and the message is the Word of God.

We are to have great enough love of our fellowman to see to it that what is of first importance is done. THEN if they are not moved walk away. The walk away is to work on his conscience as the Scripture instruct and inform us.
I said in my post to use gentleness and respect and (prayer for both is implied if you are a true believer)
No one goes to heaven on their own merit. We are born in sin and in need of Jesus as our Savior.

I stand by my statement… where is the love and concern of the OP
I have seen and heard of even greater deathbed conversions.

What puzzles me is that you seem to think I'm from the same psychological and educational mold as most other Christians here........

No, I don't place Essence before Existence, and I never have.

If you realized this, you'd acknowledge what my response to the OP was, which is basically the one I gave my own dear late dad (even as bossy and set in his ways as he was) when he was dying of kidney failure and Alzheimer's.

Unless their faith is an accident of birth. I was raised by solidly Christian parents in a solidly Christian society. I was Christian by default. If my parents and the society had been Muslim then guess what religion I would have been as I grew up.
..where is the love and concern of the OP.
He'll exhibit it by treating the man, and his beliefs, with respect and not use his impending death as an opportunity to question those beliefs.

What puzzles me...
You said you could choose to believe. I've asked you a question about it.

You can answer it and prove me wrong or refuse to do so and prove me right.
