  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Now it all makes sense. Guy can’t help but be bad luck.
I only learned that he'd said he rooted for Argentina afterwards, which was a shame. I would have bet on Spain if I'd known, I think Trump is 100% or near in his rate of endorsing a sports team in an important game and they end up losing.

So you're suggesting that leaders of host countries being involved in the celebration ceremonies is nothing new...

Nor is trying to be the "center of attention" for an achievement that the leader had nothing to do with.

Basically, this is another instance of fixation on a trivial difference from the historical precedent, and acting if that trivial difference is somehow "shocking and appalling" and represents the decline of western civilization.

Is it a slow news week where the "outrage of the week" is pertaining to a president of a host country wanting to get his picture taken with a winning soccer team?
Nothing wrong wih the pres just having a pic with the team.

Was it even done at Spain's behest? It seems everything is redacted.

If I'm correct, the funding from the 'Democracy Fund' comes from the US State Department's Human Rights & Democracy Fund (HRDF).

Ostensibly HRDF is used to promote local groups that support democracy, rule of law, religious freedom and human rights initiatives. Generally in developing world/authoritarian countries. NGO network building, rights monitoring, education and information campaigns, knowledge sharing and support for election monitors. That sort of thing.

It does a lot of good work, but HRDF has a somewhat dubious reputation in NGO circles.

There were accusations in the 2000s it was one of several US State Department grey funds or slush funds used to finance groups aligned with US objectives around 'counter-terrorism'.

More recently the focus seems to be combatting international influence campaigns by authoritarian regimes (like China and to lesser extent Russia and Islamic State) and trans-national crime groups (mostly drug cartels).

That's really murky territory, which is probably why everything is redacted.

I dunno...that analogy sounds a bit like fat-shaming and fat-phobic body fascism.

Very problematic...

Again, really makes me wonder about his cognitive health. Definitely not the first time he did something odd.
He's always tried to put himself "in the action"

If you see older footage from years ago, he was always getting in the ring to try to be part of the pictures with the winner of whatever boxing match was at his hotel.

Is he self-absorbed? Obviously.

This next part isn't addressed at you, more of a general statement:
For probably ~75% of the people claiming to "observe cognitive decline" in Trump, they've lost the right to pretend to be concerned about such things (with any credibility) after they ignored the obvious signs in his predecessor.

How many "deer in the headlights" and "roaming around like a Roomba trying to find its charging station" moments did we see the previous 4 years? And every time someone would bring it up, there was non-stop defense and insistence that "he hadn't lost a step".

Select "disbursements" in the drop down on the right.
So we have two points that you are making. And doubling down on (edit: I've caught up with the thread and I'm wrong. You're tripling, quadrupling and quintupling down on it).

The first, which ranks a ten on the bat guano crazy score, is the suggestion that Spain ought to be thankful for the money it gets from the US and therefore the Spanish football federation should respect the right of your president to act like a child photobombing an award ceremony. Because, well...he likes the attention. Not realising that billions of people in bars in Germany, in mud huts in Uganda, in igloos in Alaska, in town squares and living rooms, at sports grounds, at countless venues across the world, are watching this in real time because it's the biggest event in the world, and the world has tuned in see Spain raise the cup. And they see Trump standing on the stage looking like an imature, spoiled, needy child. You must be so proud.

The second, from one of your first posts, is the complaint that it's your money that is being sent to Spain. Well, from your link, the last year with any details is actually last year. And your share amounts to (checks calculator to make sure of the number of zeroes): $0.0000015.

You are wasting bandwidth, my friend.

...forgive me if I'm not terribly concerned whether or not their soccer team/league is offended by a sitting US president being part of their ceremony. I bet they don't kick a US president out off the stage when it was time to collect a check.

I didn't see any Spanish team members state they were offended. I did see some bemused looks and a few were doing the Trump dance....

Seems to me you're the one who needs to lighten up.

This allows people to sort by year.

2007 - about 3.8 Million
2009 - about 1.3 Million
2010 - about 6.7 Million
2011 - about 15 Million
2012 - about 2 Million
2013 - another 1 Million
2014 - another 2 million
2018 - another 500k
2022 - another 3.4 million
2023 - another 800k

And you want to take a guess as which NATO member state was consistently the lowest contributor for years?

(meanwhile, other countries, primarily us, paid in more to pick up the slack)

So, "we'll take the money, but get off the stage so you don't ruin our sportsball picture"

What's more "entitled", wanting to be in a world cup picture? Or expecting other nations give you millions in direct aid, and shoulder the cost of providing their defense?

....there you again. Say Rob, why are trying so hard to deflect attention away from the embarassing actions of our president?

When you put words in quotes, it appears that you are attributing those words to the poster you've quoted, but the poster didn't say anything of the kind:

Again, really makes me wonder about his cognitive health. Definitely not the first time he did something odd.
President Trump is not a private citizen acting on his own behalf, but he represents our nation. Unfortunately, this representation might be all too accurate.

Putting politics and personal opinions aside, Mr. Trump has done many awkward and bizarre things. No, I won’t deny that. Stating as a very moderate conservative.

It only makes me wonder about his own health; not to sound like a broken record; over and over again.

It’s VERY concerning, regardless.

Quotes also refer to a common figures of speech and idioms.

For example if I said in a thread
Apparently Dave Smith was "drinking the Kool-aid"...

It wouldn't be literal, and it wouldn't mean anyone else claimed Dave was actually drinking Kool-Aid. It's a figure of speech that means something else.

In this case putting oneself in "the action" means trying to insert oneself in the spotlight or insert themselves into high profile situations

Perhaps you've never seen a trophy raising (or a World Cup trophy raising) before Rob, so I'll give you a quick run down.

Did you notice how long the Spanish player held it down low? He wasn't doing it that long for suspense. He was "giving trump a chance to get out of the way". Infantino, in all his ridiculousness ALSO was trying to rush Trump along.

If this is just another instance of a dementia laden old man not knowing where to go, okay sure. Let's take that position.

"Why would he want Trump to move?" one may ponder.

Throwing the trophy up in the air in that initial instance is the glorious triumph, the climax of incredibly hard work against incredibly hard foes. Most well heeled people under stand that about sport and so they allow the victor and their brethren their due moment. The moment that they get to savour on their own due to their hard work.

Trump stands their like a clown in that initial moment. He steals it and he clowns them.
To be clear, his intent has NOTHING TO DO WITH wanting them to feel bad or like clowns. No, absolutely not. Trump does things like that SPECIFICALLY for the gloficiation of his own ego. It's a tiresome and boarish trait. And having a leader like that is tiresome to who don't like boarish and loutish behaviour in people they are around.

Two more good labels for this world cup stuff.

In all of your subsequent pictures, you can CLEARLY see they've been celebrating and hoisting the cup for a while. These events are not comensurate and yes, to be clear, the particular context of these pictures IS relevant to the culture of sport.

I mean geez, post a picture of them having their down syndrome children/friends hold it if you're going to post such poor comparisons.
Nor is trying to be the "center of attention" for an achievement that the leader had nothing to do with.

An inability to not recognize normal social mores around sport events. That's all that is.

The same reason a parent shouldn't entertain it or give immediate validation every time a bratty teen throws a temper tantrum about the least little thing. It's better to reserve validation for things that actually warrant it.

Otherwise it sets a bad incentive structure.

If we validated every little thing people get mad a politician/president over, they'll throw an even bigger hissy fit when people don't vote their way because they'll have been led to believe this whole time that their anger over the little trivial things was valid and reasonable and assumed that everyone was on their side.

Dunno about you, but I can chew gum and pass gas at the same time. So I find it quite easy to point out that Trump showed himself at the biggest cultural event on the planet to be, as you said, like a bratty teen wanting to impose himself into a celebration because he lacks any empathy whatsoever, making a fool of himself live in front of millions AND berate him for the countless other dumb things he has done and is doing that have much more far reaching adverse results.

But hey, if you're happy having the leader of your country looking like a buffoon to a watching world and you want to treat it as no more than a child's tantrum, then you have a serious disconnect with how you think your country appears to the rest of the planet. And why that is a serious problem for the US.

Actually, I was mainly referring to the people whining about it with the bratty teen comparison. Trump is more like the drunk uncle who says stupid stuff at Thanksgiving dinner.

If we had to validate the faux outrage of everything someone in the US Left got mad at Trump about, we'd have do that for a wide array of stupid stuff...and they're just going to be more upset when they don't get their way.

The reality is, they're not mad about ballrooms, they're not mad about soccer pictures, they're not mad about mean tweets... what they're really mad about is the fact that there's a political entity stopping them from getting the radical changes they're pushing for, and they grew up during the time of never being told "no".

Hence the reason why, if I said "You're right, Trump is acting like a self-absorbed buffoon, but I'm still not going to vote for your stupid wealth redistribution, paying off your college loans, and defund the police stuff", they'd still be just as mad at me as if I just outright defended the thing they pretend to be angry about.

I like how you compare a teenager with the Office of the President of the United States.

That makes a lot of sense to someone.

Why not both?

Is it not rational to be mad about ballrooms [esp. that don't go through the appropriate process]?
Is it not rational to be embarrassed that the leader of a country posts like a grade 8 teenager?
Is it not rational to be upset at boarish behaviour?
Is it not rational to be uspet about his treatment of allies like Canada?

what they're really mad about is the fact that there's a political entity stopping them from getting the radical changes they're pushing for, and they grew up during the time of never being told "no".
We really mad about the nepostism, the suspected child raping that is not getting dealt with, the beclowning (again) by himself against a woman he sexually assaulted/raped, the national embarrassment he is, we are really mad about how people's rights are just being completely ignored.

We are also curious are to why Republicans and more centrists aren't mad at that.

I'm not even going to go into his policy decisions or what the affects of DOGE is going to be on America.
